Would appreciate thoughts on where and what to photograph in Kauai

Obviously Wailua Falls, a double falls that I happen to get some nice rainbows at the base. Been so long ago - film days - but also a jagged coastline beach, kind of secluded, that we spent time watching (and shooting) wind surfers. Sorry don't remember name, sure any local can tell you.

Wow, Kauai is my favorite Hawaiian island! It's not called "The Garden Island" for nothing! If you don't catch Waimea Canyon (the Grand Canyon of the Pacific), you're missing a real sight! One thing I'd strongly recommend is a helicopter flight! Something like 55% of the island is inaccessible by car, and unless you're in terrific shape, hiking can be an ordeal. The helicopter will take over the Na Pali Coast, which produced one of my all-time favorite photos! Poipu, the southernmost tip of the island has a very cool blowhole. Snap some photos (I also did a sunset shot there) and then grab a meal at one of the great restaurants there! If you go to the western shore, you'll find Polihale State Park -- enter with caution: Even 4WD vehicles can get stuck in the sand (be prepared to let a lot of air out of your tires -- and then pump it back at the first gas station).

Oh, there's so much you can explore and photograph. Perhaps this map will give you some ideas: https://www.kauai.com/kauai-attractions-map

Definitely Waimea Canyon Drive and all of their stops..to the end. Allerton/McBryde Gardens. Jack Harter Helicopter (or others) for open door tour..Na Pali can't miss here. Hanalei Bay through Princeville. Kilauea Lighthouse, Wailua Falls, Opaekaa Falls, Spouting Horn (mentioned as spout above). And yes, do not miss spectacular sunsets. We were at Kukukiua Small Boat Harbor. Enjoy one of the most beautiful places in the world.

Addendum. With the exception of the suggested helicopter tour, are all the locations you identified accessible with a standard rental car? Some initial homework suggest that some of the places to photograph require four wheel vehicles. I plan to reach out to a small number of photography tour businesses that would be able to provide tours for locations that are not easily accessible.

I was there some years ago and wanted to shoot from a helicopter. At that time there was only one helicopter tour company that flew with the doors off so I went with them because I didn't want to shoot through plexiglass. Alas, I don't remember the name off-hand but it should be pretty easy to find them. They were also the company that did search and rescue so I thought they were probably pretty safe. We did a tour that included landing for lunch and swimming in a pond with a huge waterfall pouring into it and we had a really great trip. My now ex had a strong fear of heights and thought I was trying to kill her with the doors off but she calmed down after lunch.

The best safe trail along the southern coast is located in Poipu just beyond the Hyatt Golf Course and behind CJ Stables. Take a dusty road down to the stables and hang a right before you arrive in CJ’s parking lot and drive behind the stables and park at the end of the road. You can then take the trail to Keoniloa Bay. Absolutely beautiful with hundreds of opportunities for seascapes, cliff shots and mountain backgrounds. Arrive early or late afternoon to avoid hardly any other hikers but it is exceptional at any time. Stay on the coastal trail as much as possible, the interior trail can get you lost but nothing a few extra steps will not cure. You can also turn right at the makeshift parking area and walk along the cliff trail that is beside the Hyatt Golf Course and end up at Shipwreck Beach and it’s public parking area but it can get crowded. The Canyon is magnificent especially if you get to the end of the road at the Kalalau Valley at daybreak. It is worth the one hour drive from the Poipu area. If there is fog generally you wait ten minutes and it is gone. If you are adventurous you can rent one of the very rustic cabins at Kokee State Park for a few nights, that way it makes the early morning drive a short one. For over 28 years we annually were privileged to enjoy these and many more sights on Kauai. We enjoyed the less crowded south and west sides of the island more than the Kapaa & Princeville area but by all means do go to the North End but do it early to avoid the crowds. I have a friend that has been going there as long as we have and he will tell you that Princeville is the best. The Koloa Fish Market is the best for takeout authentic Hawaiian food but it is cash only. I envy you your visit. You will have a wonderful time. Aloha!

Na Pali Cliffs from either boat or walking up the Kalalau Trail for about one mile. Spectacular! Waterfalls(take your pick) everywhere. Secret Beach and it’s lighthouse. The very last stop going up the road to Waimea Canyon. There you will find the most stunning view in the entire Pacific Ocean looking out from the backside of the Na Pali cliffs. Macros of flowers. Wildlife(chickens) all over.

Second all those recommendations, additionally, I like the beaches on the north end as they will provide beauty with less crowding. Some examples of free stuff best viewed in download. If you don’t do a helicopter tour a cheaper alternative are the giant inflatables leaving Hanalei Bay to see NaPali coast. They will take you into a couple of the sea caves. Two tips, some hikes are slippery when wet (don’t wear flip flops) and winter can be a bit sketchy with the rip tides. Photos are mostly snaps but will hopefully give you some idea. #1&2 Ke’e, #3Lumahai Beach, #4Secrets Beach, #5 Polihale Beach (reef), #6 Na Pali from inflatable boat, #7 Kilauea, #8 Waimea Canyon, #9 swimming spot at Queens Bath and # 10 garden area near Princeville.

Lagoonguy…, excellent series and monologue .., Kauai is my Favorite Island …your last shot was titled gardens .., yes they are ., used to be forbidden to go in there .,, A retired navy man ., Bill .., bought the land after coming home from WW II .., It used to be a water irrigation area with the catchment dam you see in the background,,.
Bill used to sit up on top with his daughter and nurse every night in his final years to watch the sun go down .. I spent some time with him there on a few occasions..

Thank you for the insight, I did not know the back story on this beautiful location. It flooded terribly I think three years ago when the north end received 27” of rain in a couple of days. I am told by a friend who lives in Kilauea that it has come back. A couple of picks by the dam you spoke of.
