South & East Asia 07 - China/Sichuan 06: Snow covered mountains and our "cozy" hotel

In this post I present the changing countryside in the final hours of our drive on the first day: we have arrived at the higher altitudes and the mountains flanking our way portray themselves in their snowy finery. Then we make it to our hotel in Jarpo Town and - believe it or not, even though this is the wild western part of China - we are staying at a "Holiday Inn"! My images project a warm, cozy glow but the hotel was actually freezing cold, with the front door to the lobby wide open and the outside temperature at an altitude of about 2700 m/8900 ft hovering around 0C/32F. The rooms were well appointed but also not heated, and getting access to the internet entailed a trip down to the freezing lobby, which definitely kept our access time short. In our room, we resorted to having the hairdryer blowing all evening to provide a bit of heat, definitely a novel approach to room heating.

In the first part of this set we view the snow-clad mountains and landscape, in the second part the lobby of our hotel welcomes us with its deceiving, warm glow of the lights and attractive interior decoration elements.

Nice shots, both outside and inside. I especially like the interesting ceilings. Is that massive Tibetan drum used in some manner or strictly for show?
That doesn’t look like a conventional western Holiday Inn! I remember staying in a Holiday Inn in Lhasa. I wonder if the franchise is prevalent in that area. As I recall, where we stayed had recently been re-branded from an individually owned lodging.

Beautiful photos, Joe. The lobby is gorgeous, but did they have any reason for no heat?

Thank you Joe, I am happy to hear that you like them all, this greater-than-life rendition of a standing prayer wheel is really quite beautifully executed and decorated, there were a total of five of these standing in the hotel lobby, strictly for decorative purposes, I would assume.

Thank you Ellen. The ceilings were definitely striking here, especially when lit at dark. I don't really know, but would assume that this set of prayer drums/wheels was included as part of the decoration with a local flair and that it didn't serve any other particular purpose.

Holiday Inn's have had a long presence in Asia and are considered a rather more upper-segment chain - or at least were so at my time out in Asia. As with many other hotels, they might very well be individually owned and just franchised the name and administrative/promotional support, and it is definitely not unusual in the hotel industry for these affiliations to switch from one brand to another.

Thanks Barbara, glad to hear that you appreciate the beautiful decoration of this lobby. I cannot remember or might never have known the reason for no heat at this time, since this was in late October, maybe it just was not yet the time to turn the heat on? What I really couldn't understand though is why they kept their wide main doors open at these temperatures.

Thanks Rob, I am happy to hear that you enjoy this set, both with the mountains and then the Tibetan flair of the decoration in the hotel. For the next three sets, starting tomorrow, we will immerse ourselves a bit into Tibetan culture by the way of watching my captures from a traditional Tibetan dance show.
