A part of this article has some history and a lot of the photos that Leica got credit for were actually all shot using Nikon lenses.
Very interesting read on the history leading to the Nikon F.
The defining SLR and pivotal camera in history.

The F was the only Nikon I ever owned and I almost didn't change brands because of it. The go to camera for astrophotography at the time was Canon. If I wasn't so invested in my Canon gear, Nikon would be my choice.

Interesting! Couldn't afford Nikon back then or I'd have been with them. I was happy with my Pentax gear though.

My F and I celebrated our 50th anniversary together last Christmas Eve.

I like Pentax as well. I especially like the consistent compatibility of the lenses across the extensive model line of cameras.

The "F" is one tough, well-built machine. My "F" was a working press camera in Washington DC for years and then worked freelance and small-town paper for a few years. Dropped, thrown and used as a club once or twice and still works well. The Photomic head even works if you put new battery in it.
