I took my Z9 out for a test drive 12/31. I tried to keep my expectations in check, remembering this is a brand new camera to me and that a lot of what I was hoping to get from the camera would not be visible to most folks. Plus it was the first time shooting hockey in over a year!

I kept my set up simple. Just the camera and a 24-70 f2.8 Z lens. I came away realizing I should go to the 70-200 f2.8 Z lens, reduce the fps from 20 to 10-15, ensure the shutter sound simulator was on and get a better feel for the 3D focus. While it handled ISO around 10k okay, I did need to tweak the noise a bit. Next time I will play a bit with the fstop, ISO and exp comp a bit. I will definitely have to spend some time to appreciate the differences between it and my D5.

That being said, here are a few from the game I like.

What were your settings? Iso looks very good at 10,000.

Most of the time I was at 1/1000th, f5, ISO 6400-10k. I had a handful of one offs due mainly to "fat fingers" unknowingly moving the dials. The goalie was actually done in program mode and came out as 1/100th, f2.8, ISO 6400.

I did do a little noise touch up using DeNoise AI.

Don't see why you need the 70-200 unless you had to crop significantly

That is something I strive for. I want to see their intensity, enjoyment and excitement. To better be able to capture that was one of my hopes for the new camera. Now I need to focus upon which of the new features will work best. I fun journey ahead!

Think about these photos again, I was wondering why you didn't shoot at 2.8 all the time. That would lower your iso, enhance your image quality at the same time. Something else was maybe take some shots at 1/800 to again lower iso. I would experiment during warmups, look at everything on the big screen at home, evaluate and shoot again. Just me thinking out loud.

I was learning to swim by jumping in the deep end! LOL! But actually I was experimenting and trying to push the touted limits a bit, hoping for a little more DOF. In the past, sometimes that little bit extra DOF would make up for focus being on the jersey, picking up the face, too.

Now that being said, the adjustments I am going to make for this weekend's game will include:
-shooting with a 70-200 f2.8
-slowing the frame rate down to the 10-15 range
-changing file size to high efficiency*
-opening up to f2.8 (remembering Scott Kelby's words of wisdom to shoot what you paid for!)
-get more experience with the 3D mode, yet trying the wide area (small) a bit, too.
-lower the ISO to be no more than 6400, aiming for 3200.
-try slightly lower shutter speeds to accomplish the above

I tried looking at the images during warmup, but the lighting in the area from where I was shooting was not the best making it a challenge to evaluate anything other than basic focus. Perhaps brighten the display to be more visible when I zoom in?

I think that will keep me busy!
