fade in photo

I apologize if this is the wrong section. I am trying to have the selected photo fade into the red background, but just feathering in the edges, not to distort the photo. I am using Photoshop CC 2015. I am fairly knowledgeable with PS, but for the life of me cannot solve the problem.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If this is what you mean just use the gradient adjustment in PS.

Use color selection on the red background and create a mask so you can work on just the red background.

Is this what you had in mind?
I had to do it this way because I'm just editing you post. If your well versed as you say with PS, then that presentation on the right should be an easy guide.

Layer 1 is a copy of the oblong photo and then blurred. This needs to be added to extend the blur effect into a long fade as only blurring the edges of the oblong will nearly delete it.

If you are editing from the complete image, Adjust your selection tool with the proper "feather (amount)" then copy paste or use masking. Both will do the same effect.

Perfect…….

My attempts resulted in the entire image fading. Thanks for taking the time and interest to provide a solution. The product is a badge for my 60th high school reunion.

Wishing you and your loved ones a wonderful holiday season.

P.s. thank you for your ‘gift’
