I did a photoshoot this afternoon with the very attractive Erica. We had an interesting conversation and took some great photos.

Nice lighting, well taken photos but to me a few of the poses are awkward.

Well, she is not a model and I’m no good at posing. We did our best.

Wayne the first image of Erica in this set is Totally Epic! Absolutely Love it! Showcases her nail décor!

"...she is not a model and I’m no good at posing..." Wayne likely one of the most important aspects of portraiture (be it causal or commercial) is to have a well structured repertoire to fall back on and to serve as a workflow baseline.

If the talent is not agency then it's on you to have concept imagery of the visual statement(s) you wish to create.
When booking talent for a commercial gig this is virtually paramount. Especially critical if there are other team members in the mix. In commercial gigs often it is the hair stylist or makeup artist that can take a section over the top.

But wait you say you can't afford to pay team members? Did it ever occur to you that Hair Stylist and Makeup Artist ALWAYS are looking for marketing imagery... "Trade Shoots" called a "Collaborative" in the industry are the rule not the exception. Please realize that the synergy latent in a team effort is likely always far greater than working solo with a client/model. Bottom Line? Portraiture especially is not so much about the photographers photographic skill set as it is about his/her ability to bring out the very best of the person(s) before their lens.

Your ability to light is excellent, now maybe focus on your attention on how to best manage a portraiture session... Pre-shoot planing; Concept imagery; Soliciting team members; Have the results published... this list goes around the block.

Wayne I work on both sides of the lens... working often as a photo assistant and also as a key makeup artist.
Below is an example of the kind of imagery your sessions could/should generate...
btw, the makeup artist here is also my second shooter... The hair stylist is formerly with VOGUE NYC.
What goes around comes around.

I think your 2nd shot is the best. Since she is a big woman, her hair slims down her face. Maybe try putting a highlight in her eyes in post-editing.
Keep having fun!
