What is your opinion on this issue, no answer is wrong, just a different opinion.

He sounds like a complainer. People do what they like. I like messing with photo gear. He doesn't. Maybe I should write a column complaining about people who just "point and shoot."

It’s just another technology to learn and master.

Not an issue for me. Use whatever gear you want to use as long as it gives you the result you wanted. If it does you'll be happy and obviously if it doesn't then try something else. For me my iPhone 11 is great for seeing/shooting/sending moments in time but as soon as I need to zoom on something then its great for ringing the partner and asking her to bring a better camera

I use my Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus for almost all my photos. I haven't thought of it as computational photography.

I know a lot of people simply use their phones because they're so convenient. As is stated, they fit in pockets quite easily.

I think many people have already written on that subject but you can write yours from a different perspective. 🤔

The "computational" part starts with the reality that cameras in cell phones don’t have a physical diaphragm, so that feature has to be computed. Then they added a lot of other computational gizmos to the mix.

Appreciate the explanation.

Cell phone manufactures have come from behind and really slaughtered camera companies with auto everything capabilities. For the vast majority of consumers there is really no need for a modern DSLR. Most people just post photos to social media and rarely print large but “real” photographers make photographs not photos. If your aim is superior imagery a cell phone won’t make it. But why lug around a heavy-ass camera for everyday imagery? Our cell phones are awesome. Embrace them.

Most people don’t have superior skills to be able to produce superior photos. It’s not always the device that creates the superior image.

And just what exactly is wrong with "Point and shoot"? As a wild life picture taker the first thing I do is point and shoot, there may only be time for that one shot. If my subject stays around then I worry about the rest. OMHO the first law of picture taking is Get the shot

'Better' camera or more appropriate camera...

I noticed a few iPhones ago that my iPhone "destroyed" my mirrorless camera when photographing a concert at night sans flash. So there is that. But the iPhone also can deliver artifacts and other unexpected oddities in certain conditions.

I think "Computational Photography" is just evolution. The camera manufacturers will and are incorporating parts of it into modern camera bodies. They must in order to survive.

Why do you spend $$$$ on camera gear only to come home to change what that $$$$ did? I see lightening some shadows from time to time. I'm one of those point and shooter and believe it or not I shot jpeg with my D850.
