GAS pressure increasing for Nikon’s latest lens announcement. Pricing acting as a relief valve at present.
The lens is getting great reviews. My interest is for use on my Z6 and Z50 mostly for wildlife. I have the F mount 200-500 and dedicated FTZ so this is about weight and size. Doubt it competes with 200-500 image quality.
Several options have me holding back at present:
1. Get in line for it.
2. Get Sigma or Tamron with FTZ.
3. Hold out for Z mount Sigma or Tamron.
4. Hold out for Nikon Z 200-600.
If I go this way I might spring for the 1.4 TC in which case I’d sell my 200-500.
Appreciate your thoughts.
What can you photograph with the new lens that you can’t photograph with the lenses you currently own, or how can it give you better results than you are currently getting?
Down all the decades, same brand camera and lenses in combination have always worked best for me. Want, Need, Afford, the conundrum.
If you are going mirrorless, wait for the appropriate Z mount zoom.
If you are shooting with an F mount lens (or want to use an adapter) the Nikon 500mm F/5.6 is a reasonably affordable option. Hang onto the 200-500 for when you really need a zoom.
Sticking mostly with F mount bodies, when I get back into the field for wildlife the Nikkor 500mm F/5.6 and the Nikkor 300mm F/4.0 will be my most used lenses. The D500 and D850 are still my favorite bodies.

As I noted it is about size and weight. Not function.
Hang tight, rent the 100-400 lens when it becomes available and then you’ll have better information with which to decide.

Mainly because it is a Nikon lens and not a Canon.

Yup, I'd wait to it hits the market. There is no reason it shouldn't perfom good but ...

I recently came into some money - and I really wanted to drop my Sony and Canon and go NIKON crop frame - but here is the thing for wildlife/birds .....
On crop frame, as a starting point you NEED 600mm FF equivalent, that = 400mm. AND, you need to be able to go longer ( like to 600mm) For ME, the size/weight of the Nikon PF lenses are what I would WANT ! BUT, 500mm is too long for a prime and 300mm too short ! ! Nikon has never made an affordable prime 400mm AF lens - and, probably never will ! Tho, the latest 180-400 f4 would be IDEAL -IF- you could afford it and carry the weight !
Nikon (or Sony) would have to make a 400mm f4 PF lens for me to be interested - for about the same price as the 500 PF.
So, for now at least, you (and I) are stuck with the size/weight and optical performance of the 200-500.
Yes, Canon makes a 400 f4 DO - for $6.5 K 8-(
Soo, option 4 if you live that long, can afford it, and can carry/manage the weight ......
As for ME, I will continue to use my Canon 80/90D and Canon 400 5.6 L lens with 1.4X and crop when needed and use pixel enlargement.
Bottom line, on crop frame, you need 400mm minimum and ability to get to 600mm +.
.
Thank you all. You have helped stave off the GAS attack. I’ll wait till spring to decide.
Hopefully the Z 200-600 price will be announced by then and it will help my decision. I suspect they will want more than I’d like to spend. Also Sigma or Tamron may come out with their 100-400s with Z mount.
My plans over the next six months do not feature wildlife photography and I’ll be mostly traveling in RV so size and weight of my 200-500 are not a problem. I’m very satisfied with it. My next air trip at the end of May isn’t wildlife focused either.

Thanks, . I agree. Can I get to 560/600mm with it and still have decent AF with the D500 (2X) ?? I am thinking a single lens solution and not having to carry the 500 PF also. I have been very spoiled with my Canon !

Nikons f mount bodies are some of the best cameras in the world. I see no reason to go out and chase mirrorless.

I shoot with the Sony a9 with the Sony 200-600 mm lens, I don't use my Sony 100-400 since I bought the 200-600. Personally, for wildlife, the 100-400 is not long enough. I would wait for the 200-600. How knows, I may also.
