Grey Market Camera Gear Again!

I find it very interesting that none of the stores or companies buying and selling used camera gear ever mention a word about the gear being grey market. They never ask when buying and never mention what they are selling you when you buy used from them. Prices are based on the items and not where they came from. I really think it does not matter to them or anyone else in the least. Seems to be more hyped up false information the so called experts like to rant about on the various forums to keep themselves entertained. Some will go to their grave believing it all true. There is false information to be found on any kind of forums. I think maybe gun forums are pretty much tied with camera forums when it comes to people wanting to impress with their intelligence. This post might possibly cause some to melt their keyboards defending the grey market BS but common sense tells you it means nothing to buyers and sellers of used equipment. I don’t mean to trigger any of you but for some it only takes a post on any camera related subject and you are ready to chime in and write a book filled with your knowledge. CHILL! I posted this for the people that have been brainwashed about grey market. It only matters for warranty work. God bless all of you and just enjoy your photography. Happy Thanksgiving

I've never had a camera need repair, in or out of warranty, in 50 years.

(But I won't say that. )

My Nikon D750 was part of the recall. At the time it worked perfectly but I sent it in and they replaced the recall parts, cleaned it and gave it a going over. Had my D750 been a grey market and the shutter failed the cost of repair would be on me for that manufacturer's defect. Also, I prefer knowing that if any of my Nikons need repair that I can send them to Nikon and not have to find a repair shop that will work on a grey market model.

JUST MY OPINION!!

For me, it is simply a matter of mathematics and numbers.

If one is contemplating making a purchase of gray market equipment they have to deced if the savings on money is justified IF the equipment will require service and it is not available as per parts and policy and thereby becomes useless.

I have the same approach to used equipment, gray market or domestic. Even if it is cosmetically perfect, internal unforeseen issues can arise and result in costly repairs.

In the old days of mostly mechanical cameras, equipment that couldn't or wouldn't be repaid by the official shop could be repaired by many in independent repair facilities. Certain parts could be made or improvised or scavenged for other old cameras. It ain't like that anymore!

In the past, I have purchased gray market and used equipment at very advantageous prices. Most of it was pressed into hard daily service and never failed.

Where a major purchase is concerned, I usually shy away for gray market gear because I would require proper factory-authorized service and an official warranty.

With used gear, there is always a bit of a gamble but again, on a significant purchase. I would want to obtain the serial numbers in advance and make sure the unit can be serviced and that parts are available for a reasonable length of time.

The arithmetic is simple enough. If the unit can be eventually repaired but at an exorbitant cost that usurpers the saving in a gray market purchase- it's a NO! That's what manufacturers and distributors count on to discourage gray market purchases.

I had a grey market D750 at the time and Nikon repaired mine at no charge. Might not work next time but did on the D750.

Wow!! Congrats! My understanding is that if it's not a USA model, they won't repair it. Maybe there is an exception to the rule.

There is no such thing as a grey market model. Regardless of what market the cameras and lenses are sold in, the physical hardware is pretty much the same. For some manufacturers, grey market is simply a warranty issue and will some it's a warranty and repair issue. But, I've read that Nikon is easing up on its grey market repair issues. Seems Nikon's regional policies were effecting its sales.

I do recall that they announced they would repair certain models of grey market cameras. This was a few years ago. Well, it seems that they have changed their minds.

This is from the horse's mouth.

What you're saying is that there is no difference between the cameras sold here in the US and those sold overseas. Yes, they come out of the same factory and have the same specs, though certain accessories like power cords can be different, and they may not come with a manual that is printed in English. They can be legally imported and sold here, but you're screwed if there is something wrong with one that you buy. The sellers of these grey market cameras often offer third party warranties, but good luck with that.

Some Nikon USA authorized dealers like B&H sell grey market goods, but they clearly mark them as "imported" and don't try to scam anyone.
