The next images were the most difficult I ever took or had to process. I hope you will forgive me if you feel they are too repetitive, but I hope you will take a moment and remember the atrocities and injustices our societies continue to allow.

In 2005, film director Can Togay and sculptor Gyula Pauer created a memorial call "Shoes on the Danube" in memory of those who lost their lives during the last years of World War II.

"During this time, Jews in Budapest were often rounded up on the banks of the Danube before being shot into the water which would then carry them away. Even more harrowingly, they were regularly forced to remove their shoes as these were a valuable commodity during the war; their murderers would then sell them or use them themselves."

"The national socialist Arrow Cross Party had taken control in Hungary. Led by Ferenc Szálasi, the party shared a number of beliefs with Germany’s Nazi Party – including Antisemitism. From October 15, 1944 to March 28, 1945 the Arrow Cross Party ruled the country as, in cooperation with the Nazis, thousands of civilians (mostly Jewish) were deported, sent to slave labour camps or murdered. At the same time, Arrow Cross militiamen ran loose in Budapest wreaking havoc and destruction. During the party’s five month rule, estimates suggest that 10,000 people were killed in the streets with a further 80,000 sent to concentration camps."

So poignant. Sad, horrific, memories Tim. Thanks for remembering. We must remember too, that defeat of Nazism did not mark the end of Hungarian misery. I remember a former friend, aspiring med student, daughter of a Budapest doctor, expelled from university after Soviet tanks rolled, and six weeks before graduation. Happily, she was able to complete at McGill in Montreal.

How appropriate,at a time when the very event of the holocaust is downplayed and denied, that you should experience and post this poignant reminder. SO difficult to imagine the atrocities and the horrors people faced. I hadn't heard about this memorial and I find it especially moving. I can't begin to fathom the purpose of denying it and rewriting history as if to minimize and wipe out its existence.

Amen!!

So glad you had a wonderful trip, Larry, and welcome back!

And, as always, thank you for your ongoing support and "hosting" duties.

Here are just a couple of images from our trip down the Danube in August.
I hope you all enjoy.

Thanks so much, Pat. I'm really glad you're
enjoying those images, and yes, we loved
the cruise (best vacation every) and my
birthday was every bit as enjoyable!

I never heard of this either, Pat, until we started doing research
before we went on our trip. I knew what to expect in Nuremberg,
or as it was called, Nurnberg, but like you, was totally shocked
by the cruelty of the ongoing slaughter of Jews in Buda, Hungary.

We MUST never forget; we MUST always refute the deniers!

Thanks, Ron, for you kind and insightful words. We
can't be the last generation to "remember" the atrocities
of WWII and beyond. We must teach our children, grand
children and every generation.

It was a horrible dream for millions of Jews, "feeble" minded,
and those deemed less desirable that the ruling party.

And it continues today in so many countries, and so often
we turn a blind eye, or pretend it's not happening.

Man's inhumanity to man has been around since day one,
but we can do something about it...we all MUST do
something about it...help one another, care for one another,
love one another....
