Canon S20 error

I'm currently on vacation and my Canon camera has thrown a fit. It comes up with an S20 error message when you press the button to take a photograph. When the button is pressed there are a number of noises that occur quickly as if a photograph is being taken but nothing really happens except that the error message appears omn the screen. I suspect that the error has something to do with shutter operation. I have tried turning the camera on and off, I have tried taking the battery out for a period of time, both to no avail.
So, two questions:
1. Any brilliant ideas on how to correct the problem ... as I said, I am on vacation and would really like to be taking photographs!!
2. If my camera is dead, what are the options? I can get it looked at when I get home and get a quote to see if repair is reasonable. Alternatively, if it really is dead, what camera similar to what I have is best. I should add my camera is an EOS 7D mark 1. I really love my camera and it suits me perfectly. Also I have a number of lenses for it so would want something compatible so I don't waste the lenses.
Thanks for your help

With a little research, it seem to be related to shutter assembly failure.

Look at buying a used 7DII possibly.

It's a goner, time to replace or move on. I saw a used and refurbished EOS 7D mark 1 at KEH for $240, and a new one from B&H for $1800.

So sorry for your situation. Notwithstanding all the "travel light" folks, I always have at least two cameras, sometimes a small one as well on a big trip. Don't know where you are, but a local rental might be better than a Desperation buy. Best of good luck!

Quickdraw, I am in the Daintree in Oz ... I agree about the hiring option but here it is not an option ... and yes, I think my beloved camera is dead !

Yes, thought so ... thanks. Perhaps I should upgrade to a Mark 2??

Yep, I think you are correct on all counts ... searching for a second hand 7D in Oz is a little problematic though.

The shutter is dead. I had that camera and got that error message while it was still under warranty. Canon replaced the shutter and all the electronics related to the shutter under warranty. This is the only time I've had to have warranty repairs on any of my Canons. Since this camera is obsolete now, Canon will not even work on them any more. I'd sell it on eBay for parts and use the money towards a used 7D Mk II. Much better camera anyway. I love mine.

I had this problem years ago with Canon EOS 30D and as you say with your camera it’s related to a shutter problem.
After some investigation which included how to replace the shutter, I came across a solution which worked and you should try it considering your current situation. Basically it involves continually pressing the shutter button and is to do with the contacts in the shutter actuation becoming ‘burnt’. Sounds strange but it worked. I had it occur when out on a trip several times and I would just keep pressing the shutter button repeatedly until it started working. After several episodes of this happening the problem went away and was fine until the camera went away some time later. It was stolen.
Hope this helps

MikeT9 ... thanks I'll try it. I think the suggestion of a second hand 7D mark 2 is good going forward though!
