The Chicago Marathon is the fourth-largest race by number of finishers worldwide. The 2021 race resumed the annual Chicago tradition following the 2020 cancellation due to the Covid pandemic.
Abbott Health & Fitness ExpoMcCormick Place is the largest convention center in North America. The original convention center opened in 1960 and was destroyed by fire in 1967. The replacement building opened in 1971, now called the East Building. The West Building, holding the expo, opened in 2007.

2021 Chicago Marathon I positioned at the first public view of the course, under Randolph on Columbus. The total field was released in numerous waves where a few thousand would go by followed by about a minute break in the field.

2021 Chicago Marathon State Street, between Miles 1 & 2.
2021 Chicago MarathonJohn approaching the 12-mile mark in Old Town. He had decided to stop at the half (13.1 miles) and consider this a 'training run' for better results next time.
2021 Chicago Marathon About 35,000 people started the race, with just over 26,000 completing the race within the 6:30 hour course limit. It was a hot, humid day and not the best conditions for running 26.2-miles.

Another great set and story Paul.
Thank you Tom, Paul, Mike, Frank! I too have finished Chicago Marathon three times over the past 20 years, but none since 2013. In all these years, Sunday was the first time I've ever done the follow role, riding the L around the city. The course passes near where I live on the north side and it was watching the race back in 1999 that prompted me and the then wife to decide to try it ourselves. I now have 88 total finishes on a plan initially to break 4-hours, then to get all 50-states. Watching the race Sunday has me thinking maybe I'll even start again on the 100 total finish goal. I need to lose a lot of pandemic weight if that urge is going to become reality...
As usual you did good, Paul!

You captured the vibe of the race, well done Paul!
Excellent captures, Paul.
Thank you Loren, Dan, Jim, Elliott! This morning, of course just 3 days later, temps are in the low 60s and turning Fall crisp and clear.
Two-thirds of the starting runners finish over 26 miles! Wow, that’s a lot of people. Nice photos. They give me a feel of the race. I can’t imagine racing with a mask.
Congratulations on your marathon finishes as well. It boggles my mind to even contemplate the effort.

A really nice series. My first marathon was the Mayor Daley Marathon in 1977. My last was in 2019 and I plan to keep keep going as long as possible. Keep going with the camera and your running.
