I have a canon 100-400L II lens that I use on my EOS R & 7Dii. I purchased a canon 1.4 converter V-III but am finding the images are very soft. (extremely disappointed). I’ve tried upping the shutter speed etc. but still soft focus on all images. The mentioned lens used as is takes perfectly sharp images. Any way to solve this issue?
An example of one of your images would help us help you.
Which version of the converter did you purchase?
I'm surprised at that. You have a good lens and good converter - unless you got a converter with a defect. Let's see if you get useful suggestions. I use a Kenko 1.4, and it's fine.
Sorry forgot. It’s version III
I’m not new to photography and Mostly shoot wildlife and landscape. I’m currently on vacation so can’t post any at this time but I can see the soft focus on the back of the camera. After removing the converter all images taken without it are spot on focus.
I was surprised myself Jerry. Don’t know what could be defective on it. Viewing through the converter looks perfectly fine but something is definitely going on.
Have you tried manual focus, would eliminate optics at least?
I use a 1.4 on a Nikon 200-500. There is a slight degradation in sharpness visible in major crops, but I'm getting subjects that would otherwise be out of reach. I don't use the on camera monitor much, and don't put a lot of faith in it. How do the photos look on your computer?

All guesses without samples. Could be several things, but since you are getting good photos with out the converter, it is more than likely the converter. Or movement. Longer lens more chance for movement, but that should show as Morton, not soft focus.

Yes, buy the new Canon 100-400L Mk II lens and you will see a huge improvement on sharpness and focusing speed.
As noted on previous post, I’m currently on vacation and no way to see them on the computer only viewing on the camera screen. But images taken without it are clear and in sharp focus.
Yes, it’s spotless and very clear
