Canon just announced a new 3D lens. L glass and only for the EOS R5 camera used for VR, but cool just the same.

3D has been around since the 1950's and never really took off. About 10 or 15 years ago 3D television tried to take off but failed. One innovation was a 3D Game Boy device that could display the 3D effect on a small Game Boy screen without 3D glasses, but none of the Televisions adopted that technology. Aside from the novelty of 3D, a story told in 3D is really no more compelling than one shown in HD. It's the content that counts. That's why I got hooked on my first Beatles song listening to it on a transistor radio with a one inch speaker.

3D has been around since the 1950's and never real... (show quote)

Even from a cyclopian camera, motion picture is 3D by default. Motion provides enough 3D data to our brains.

Stills, OTOH, require a stereo pair or there would be no sensation of parallax.

Anywho, when it comes to 3D, keep in mind that Canon is a major player in motion picture gear.

Skuze me, Mr. Photo Historian ... but “since the 1950’s” ? Really !?!?!!?

A bit more UHH entertainment there.

3D predates film.

3D has been coming and going for waaaay over 100 years, and it’s back again today, and this time with a new name, or at least new initials: “VR”.

3D movies, with polarized glasses handed out to the theater audience began in the 1950's. I saw a few as a kid. I believe that is what the Canon lens is for, 3D and virtual reality video, not for making lantern slides. You are skuzed.

Acknowledged.

Thanks for your explanation. Didn’t catch that you meant strictly motion picture.
