At least they don't have to hold hands.

At first, I thought it meant she had nothing to do with her time.

Being a retired teacher I got it instantly.

Everyone/everything in order and under control, all lined up.

As an active educator, I’m inclined to dislike this particular joke. “In line and in order” is an education in compliance, not in thinking. Actual education is far messier and demands, at least in some measure, both rebellion, and a tolerance of said rebellion. Without that, education is merely indoctrination, and I see that pattern as both child abuse and a sabotage of the future.

I remember one of my teachers ordering the class to line up “one by each”

Oh, try handing out materials or graded papers to a mob as opposed to a line (even if in their desks).

When I needed order and some student questioned it I had a quick memorized short lesson that took less than 5 minutes on the difference between the order/lines etc. and not doing that. In 35 years I do not remember a single student who didn't decide that for some things order is the best choice. And that includes hard core gang members (29 of my 35 years were in East Los Angeles).

One gang member lost it one day when several students were complaining and asked to talk to the class. He gave them a lecture about how if he could go with the program and get B-'s following my rules and methods than a mixed bunch of Gifted/AP "Brains" could do it also.
So shut up and work.
He was on probation and his PO had an office on campus, with two other POs-kind of a large/tough high school that also had 3 full time cops and a total of 4 deans of discipline. He was in my Gifted class with a few AP students because it fit their and his schedule and the PO had picked me for his teacher of the available History classes. Actually the kid tested as qualified for gifted & AP classes. A lot of the leaders of the gangs in East Los Angeles were GATE or AP qualified who got involved in the gangs and used their brain to take over and become a leader.

I also taught a lot of lessons on how to plan, organize etc. your study and learning. A huge % of students made it to Jr and Sr High (1/2 my career at each level) without ever learning an organized way to study. I usually gave 2 or 3 different ways and let the students pick the one they preferred. I also gave lessons on Cognition and how the brain worked/thought and then let the students pick and choose.

A few times a year, often open house days or nights I had former students (towards the end of my career one was a parent of a current student) drop by and tell me that they had tried my methods for hard classes later in HS or college and "Guess what, it worked!" In one case it was three guys, two in college and one a Marine who dropped by so since no one else was in the room at the time I answered "No shit! I thought I was doing that stuff to avoid having to teach History." They started laughing and one of them added "My little sister is in one of your classes now. I told her to stop complaining and pay attention because you knew what you were talking about." I could hear them laughing all the way down the hall and the stairway down to the ground floor.

A gifted student whose older sister had also been my student walked in to sign in on the first day of school and as she looked at her print out to make sure it was the right room and teacher for that period she said: "You're Perkins, the one my sister says is the Know it all who really does know it all!" I told her I didn't know it all, just a whole lot. She added well that puts you ahead of a lot of teachers I have had.

I also met many former students who had become teachers and a few said they became History teachers because of my example. One of them added "You were the first history teacher I ever had who actually enjoyed the subject and had fun making it a story instead of just facts and dates."

Yes, I distinctly remember lining up when a school handbell was rung.
