The Tamron 150-500 “holds a candle” to the Sony lenses mentioned and at $1400 offers pretty good value for money. Lots of choices. I recommend going to a good camera store and shooting them on your body and comparing. I did that on a recent trip and I couldn’t tell one lens image from the others. Good luck sorting it out

Thanks, we have good camera store in Salt Lake. Great suggestion!

I also have read some really good reviews of the new Sigma Sport 150-600. I used one on a Nikon 750 for quite a while and liked the results.

Heh... no.

It's a good lens...but not in the same league as either of the two Sony long zooms out now.
Now if you need to count your pennies cost wise...then go for the Tamron.
Just don't believe it's just as good as...it's not.

You usually get what you pay for in this world.

Based on what? (show me photo testing proof) All reviews and tests show it to be comparable. Tamron makes some really good glass. In fact they make a lot of lenses that are branded “ Nikon” and “Canon” surely others too. I am a recent convert to Sony after shootingNikon for 40 years (I bought my first FE w my own money when I was 14) I’m not taking away from Sony glass, but there is also a reason that the 200-600 is a G lens. If it was better than anything else it would be a GM (G Master).

Umm...based on reviews.
The Tam and Sigma lenses are softer...especially in the corners.

They cost less however...and there is a very good reason for that. The optics aren't as good.
There is ALWAYS a trade off.

But in today's market the best of the third-party lenses (both prime and mid- or long zoom) typically offer some useful tradeoffs vis-à-vis the camera-brand alternative, such as lower weight, more compact form, etc. so the decision is not black and white, nor based solely on lesser cost.

So there is little current basis for the brand snobbery of old.

Better alternative may be to rent a lens under consideration for a longer test period.

Snobbery? What are you going on about...

Native glass ...is always the way to go...if you can afford it.

I feel no superiority because I can afford the native glass...nor would I feel snubbed if someone has better than I (and folks do btw).

But the difference between what I have in my long zoom and the next level (400 f2.8 or 600 f/4) is an additional $10k.

The difference between the Tam and Sigma and the Sony native zooms are ... a few hundred in difference.

Save your nickels...get the Sony 100-400mm or 200-600mm.

That step up in quality is worth the extra cash...which is minimal.

Just not true. For example, in some cases a Sigma out rates any Sony, and in others third-party lenses are equal.

Also check out the full frame 70-300mm "G" lens. This is one you can carry around, and use for a walk around lens. It has great color and stays sharp way past what the 24-105 can offer.

I have been shopping for a lens for my Sony alpha 6400 - this is want I understand the situation to be:

When you use your Sony "E" 70-350 with your APS-C cropped-sensor camera, the "effective" focal length of the lens is x1.51 longer or 106-529mm. If you decide to use this same lens on your new full-frame camera (which was designed for "FE" Sony lenses) the focal length will be 70-350mm but you will not get full-frame pictures since your new camera is designed for larger and heavier Sony "FE" lenses. Any of these will all fit on any Sony e-mount camera.

The 70-350 (APS-C) Sony lens you now have is a newer Sony design, is lighter, and uses linear motors (perhaps faster) for auto focus than the older "FE" Sony lens design which use stepping motors. They all have a good reputation for quality.

Yes, 'some' lenses.
But we are talking about long lenses...which aren't even mentioned on the list you provided...although the only one with good marks is the one the OG poster already has (maybe he should stay put then).
Yes...some third party lenses are good enough for the 24mp sensors. Some focal lengths are easier than others.
But when you want to go long (one of the most difficult optic challenges) ... go native...always...if you can.

There we go... the native Sony long lens wins...of course.
Not sure how anyone would think it would be different.

Look at the Sony 200-600 vs. the Sigma 150-600 -- can't definitively say one is "better" than the other.

And doesn't take heft into consideration, which is a factor for many who want to handhold.
