I was using the D3 yesterday evening, everything normal. Grabbed it on the way out early this morning to check on something. Stopped to take a picture, the camera was completely dead. I had checked the battery yesterday and there was 70 odd percent of charge left. Got home, put a fresh battery in and the camera was fine. Put the old one in the charger, the charger wouldn't light up. Another spare put in and the charger performed normally. This is an off brand, but one of my batteries that registered as new. Did you ever experience or here of something like that?
Auto Off is set for 8 seconds.
Yes, over the years I've had two batteries suddenly fail and then refuse to take a charge. One even swelled up enough I had a bit of trouble getting it out of the camera. One Sony branded, one after market.

Thanks - this one appears to be completely normal. It was one I had relied on, unfortunately.
So I've learned to try and keep a spare in in my pocket, but admittedly it's not 100 percent! If I'm shooting around the house I now reflexively check the battery charge when I pick up the camera.

These are not very "pocketable", but last quite a long time. I usually do the same, check when I pick the camera up - the menu is set to that position on ready to grab cameras. I had checked and been using it last night, in future I won't make the same mistake!

Yes. I have two batteries for my Porter Cable drill. I’ve been using it regularly the last few weeks and alternating batteries which have both been performing flawlessly and recharging normally. Suddenly yesterday, one battery was flat (according to the indicator) and the charger won’t recharge it. Bam - no warning - just died. The odd thing is it measures 18V with my DVM (it’s rated for 20V) It has tamper proof torx screws holding the case together, but I have a set of the appropriate bits, so tomorrow I’m going to open it and do a post mortem. Never seen one die quite this way.

Yes, yrs ago and I don't remember the brand but It wasn't Nikon , It was my first and LAST third party battery.
It has happened to me. If you had the original battery for your D3 consider that the battery is pretty old already and has done its job. Time for a new one.
They are only $129 at B&H. I still use the original battery for my Olympus EM-1 and it is already 10 years old. I know it could fail anytime now...but I have Wasabi replacements.

Some years back, when I bought a new Canon 6D it, as expected, came with a new Canon LP-E6 battery. Battery was dead right out of the box and wouldn't take a charge no matter what I did. That's the only battery problem I've ever had either with Canon or aftermarket batteries. Fortunately, I had other LP-E6 batteries so I was able to play with my new toy without delay, and, B&H quickly replaced the bad one.
I've never had one fail, but I guess any battery can die suddenly - apparently. If it doesn't take a charge, that's a good sign that it's time to retire it.
Does anyone know who makes Canon batteries for them. After one bad experience with after market batteries ill only buy orginal now for few dollars more
