from my walk yesterday

Posting a picture from a walk yesterday.

Question on the composition -- I've been playing with the crop on this picture. When I looked at this picture, it actually took me a second or two to find the subject (bird) in the frame, and my first inclination was to crop some more out to make it more prominent. My second thought was that that the natural camouflage made it more interesting to me.

Would love to hear what others think. on this or anything else about it.

Tech Details -- Nikon z5, 200mm f/6.3 ISO 1000

Very nice. I agree -- interesting. Did you ask him to turn around and stick his head out?

Yes, but he seemed more interested in the berries for some reason.

Dear Ken,

I am an amateur, so please take my comments with that in mind. You asked and I appreciate it very much. I think this is the most under-used section on the UHH...not many people try to improve their skills...they like equipment and comments such as, "nice set." But here goes my analysis.

The bird's face is framed by the foliage...so that should be the focus. The bright white butt end of the bird should not be the focus or subject of of the shot which is what I looked at. The face should be the subject. IMO the bird face is in focus so that is a huge plus. Maybe dodge in the white butt and try to use a circular filter to bring out the face of the bird. I recommend cropping the heck out this photo...the bird is so small in the photo that it is over shadowed by the foliage. If that cannot be accomplished and your photo acceptable to you then I'd probably just chalk this up to experience and not do any more work on the shot and move on to my next photo to work on.

I know this sounds harsh, but I am getting more and more harsh with my own shots...there are shots of family, etc., where I really dont care about blemishes in the pic..I want the family in there. But if it is something I want to display, then I curate the heck out of things. Just the other day, I entered a contest with what I thought was a good shot of a mom and baby elephant facing away from me...cute moment because they were being obstinate. That was until I saw a every similar shot from another photog contestant where the critters were kind of galloping...his shot had movement, emotion, etc. Mine, not so much...so I start over! His / her shot was better.

Anyhoo, keep up the good work!

Doesn't sound harsh at all -- If I wanted unconditional praise, I can go to (nonphotographer) family and friends. I was going for an idea, and wasn't sure whether it worked or not, so I asked for opinions.
