I wish we had more news reporters like Walter. It's a shame that they are now editorialists and pandering to ratings.

Americans trusted him. With good reason. His reporting of the space program was fantastic. JFK's death brought him to tears.

I have to say, though, that while we look at Cronkite and other reporters of his era as paragons of virtue, the press still had its biases back then, and even protected politicians whom they favored and attacked those they didn't, just like today. Look at how they shielded FDR from being seen in a wheelchair, how they ignored Kennedy's affairs, and how they attacked Nixon in 1960 at the debate.

I remember those days as well. Two stories I remember about the man…first was that he drove to NYU (college in the city) in a car his freshman year that had no forward gears…so he just drove in reverse. Don't know if that's true or not but considering he went to school in the 30s and it was the middle of the Great Depression it probably is true. Second thing is that his personal politics were pretty far to the left…from what I read years ago he would have thought Bernie Sanders was a conservative. His politics aren't important though…what is important is that you would have never known them while he was on the job…as he used to say "That's the way it is" when he signed off because he just reported the news…wasn't interested in being the news or making the news or clicks or anything but telling you the facts. That sort of real journalism is gone these days pretty much…which is why nobody trusts the media anymore…now it's clicks, get more followers, espouse your personal point of political view, and make the people you disagree with into monsters.

I remember Walter Cronkite. When I was a kid my parents used to watch him every night. He was quite a journalist. He started off as a war corrospondent during WW II. I remember watching him on the day of the John F. Kennedy assination. I remember seeing him all chocked up as he reported it.

With Walter Cronkite there's a lot of I remembers. I remember him signing off with "And that's the way it is on September thirteenth twenty twenty one." Then he would straighten out his papers and that was it. And that's usually how it was, no politician's opinion, no famous entertainer's opinion; just that's the way it was, miss him.
