Two teenagers take the US Open by storm.

Emma Radacanu is the US Open champion. She played 3 qualifying matches to make it into the main draw and then won 7 more matches to become champion. First time a qualifier captured the Championship. Only time a player wins 7 matches (actually 10) without losing a set. More than amazing and remarkable!! (in Red & Blue)
Leylah Fernandez is runner-up. She celebrated her 19th birthday at the Open.

Emma, from England, but born in Canada & Leylah, a Canadian are incredible young woman, not only for their tennis, but also for their maturity. composure and magnetic personalities! With "kids" like these, the world has a great future. If you did not follow the US Open, you missed a wonderland of excitement and drama.

Thanks for viewing,
Mark

I agree with you, Mark:the US Open was fabulous and quite entertaining! I was touched by Leylah’s tribute to 9/1. Both young ladies were exemplary in play and speech. Your pics capture their personalities perfectly! Thanks for sharing

Refreshing! I’ve had enough of the older gals and their attitudes.

Yes, the interviews after the match were just as remarkable.

This is the first tennis match I have watched in many years, primarily because I was tired of watching the same people dominating the sport. This was a really refreshing return to tennis for me. I spent a great part of my youth playing tennis and began following the televised events back when Rod Laver was playing.

I began watching about the same time. 9 inch B&W TV. I played tennis for about 15 years. Started in my early 40's. Loved it. I never lost interest in tennis, but only watch the major tournaments. The conditioning of pro tennis players is amazing!

Thanks for the reply.

Both were amazing and Raducanu had a great number of comments that belie her age. My favorite from her was that "constantly comparing myself to others is a thief of happiness". God bless her.

Lost to many who only watched the final, though, is that Fernandez beat #2 #3 #5 and another Grand slam champ (Kerber) in the 4 matches prior, all in 3 sets, and all with tie-breaks. She was maybe 5-10% 'off' for most of the final, most likely due to fatigue. She had been on court longer in 6 matches than Raducanu had in 9 prior to the final, meaning Raducanu had an extra week to recover from less exertion. God bless Fernandez too.

Both are, as others noted, class acts. I'd like to see them play doubles together. The lefty righty combo is a tradition, and both would benefit from more volley work.

And both got to where they are without even ONE scream, grunt or groan..............isn't that a quite wonderful compliment to their achievement !

Mark,
Agree with you wholeheartedly. Their final match was excellent. Too bad one of them had to lose.

That's exactly how I felt. I don't think I had ever wanted both combatants to win.

Too bad it couldn’t end in a tie! I loved watching these girls play. Truly a breath of fresh air👍
