I am interested in selling my Nikon D500 with the Nikkor 200-500 lens. I was thinking about asking $1600.00 for the combo. I also own a D850 and D810, but I am interested in upgrading the D500 to the D5 or D6. The camera is in good working condition, and the lens has not seen a lot of usage since I got my 400mm. I will use the money from them to purchase either a D5 or D6.

I have never sold any of my gear before, but I know the people on this site seem to be very helpful with their suggestions concerning any matters photographic. Those of you who have seen my work, know that I use my equipment for wildlife photography, and although they are used in the field, I attempt to keep them in good working order. So before I start a post to actually sell the equipment and posting images, I was needing some input about the pricing.

Thank you for any help or advice.

Price seems a little low to me. I don’t think you’ll have a problem selling. You might want to price and list them separately.

First, there are many ways to sell used gear. The least hassle (and lowest prices) involve used product resellers like mbp, as well as camera retailers like B&H and Roberts, who buy used items. You will get more by selling the items privately, but this involves more hassle and risk. I personally have bought and sold successfully on Ebay, but some members dislike this option. Fortunately, this forum has a member buy/sell section, and I have found my transactions here to be very satisfactory. Very nice people as well.

When listing gear, important information includes whether the item is USA (did it come with a US warranty card), and the number of shutter activations on the camera. Nikon camera bodies meant to be sold in the US have serial numbers that begin with the number « 3 ». Pictures of the gear and identification of any significant flaws or dings are important.

Your asking price of $1,600 would make a very attractive package, but you would be excluding potential buyers (like myself) who already have one of the items already. I echo the suggestion of Jack47 to list them separately. Check ebay for going « sold » prices.

Good luck. I could be interested in another D500 body…

Thank you so much for the advice. I am heading out for the holiday weekend. I have seen you many times on my posts, so I will consider the idea of selling them separately.

If you want to sell them together for 1600.00 plus shipping I will be happy to purchase them. Please let me know. Thanks Bob. Make a great birthday gift for my wife.

I would agree that $1600 sounds a bit low. But of course condition has a lot to do with used gear prices. I have the same gear and would not sell mine for that. But would grab that deal in a heart beat if I was looking. And I also wouldn't mind having another D500 body.
Why do you want to go with the D5/6?

The Nikon D500 typically sells for around $1000. The Nikon 200-500 also typically sells for around $1000. I would list each one for $1000, and maybe take $1900 for both.

But if you want them sold quickly, the $1600 will get the job done.

Good working order is a given when selling gear. Cosmetic condition, shutter count, and whether a US model or not are paramount in pricing gear. Same for the lens except for the shutter count of course. It sounds like, by your description, you have a well used camera and lens in working order with a high shutter count on the D500. Do your own due diligence on pricing, post pictures of your gear and you will get your answer about pricing by the interest shown or lack thereof. That's my advice.

I have just returned from my holiday trip. I want to thank all of you for the comments and advice. I would also like to add that I really appreciate your advice that I might be asking too little for the combo. I really like the camera in some ways, but I recently used a friend of mine's D5 and it does extremely well with noise in low light situations. A lot of my shooting occurs just before sunrise as that is a high point of the day for wildlife activity in this area. That, in conjunction with the higher fps and faster tracking and target acquisition, is also a plus. I am also evaluating my images in an effort to see if buying the D5/6 is really worth the money overall. It may turn out that I can beat this GAS attack and be satisfied with the D500 and just sell the 200-500, since I don't really use it enough. Thanks again for all your help.
