Some old Mouse Pads will work as well.

Trying to unscrew a filter (snugly) mounted on a CP (not necessarily "stuck") without holding the top of the CP will afford the same results, continued rotation of the filter.

No such problem has occurred. The extra filter is not involved.

Handy sometimes, for some completely different problem ...

This is one of UHH’s most archetypically fuggedup threads in a looooooong while. Riddled with useless “advice” and even toadally lacking in entertainment value. The blind leading the blind yet all the while pretending to be photographers. Disgraceful.

The thread had value. The OP got a solution to his problem and posted it on page two.

I agree, there wasn't much that would be considered entertaining.

Did you hear the one about ......

I sometime have this problem. Use a cheap non-slip vinyl lid opener to hold the outside lens and hand-hold the other. Works to solve my problem and very light-weight accessory to carry in my travel kit.

Good idea.

I had written a lengthy (excellent!) reply, and the Internet went out. : ( Below is a basic version.

You know the outer ring is supposed to rotate, right? Either bring the lens to a camera shop/repair shop or get a hack saw and cut through the outer, rotating filter section and remove it. Next, cut through the attaching ring that is rotating.

I had the same problem with my UV glass. I had to take a pair of pliers and very gentle twist the filter off of the lens. Now I put don’t twist them on all the way. I can not say enough about not putting too much pressure on the filter. Be very gentle.

Stuck filters can be maddening and not logical. Applying extra force is NOT going to be successful. A filter wrench might help. But I have found that a gentle approach often works best. Or, let it sit for a little while and try again. I have had filters that resist furious attempts to remove them suddenly twist off easily.

BTW, I don’t like to stack filters for IQ reasons. If I want to use a CP, I take off the UV.

Good luck!

6 pages so far. 5.8 pages of off topic bad advice by users who apparently cannot read. Typical UHH.

When I bought my Nikon 18-200 lens I also bought a UV filter and a circular polarizer filter for it. The UV stays on the lens all the time for protection. I have used the CP lens several times and at no time had any problems attaching or removing either filter. I mount them with the CP lens first followed by the UV for protection. Today
I removed the UV but the CP lens would not come off. It would not unscrew, it just revolved as if there were no threads. Then I found it would not tighten up either, not in the least. Now it will neither come off nor seat. If anyone has had a similar experience and solved the problem I would appreciate hearing from you.

One problem is that the CP filter is the same diameter as the camera lens so it is hard to get a grip on the filter. Take some masking tape and make about three careful wraps around the filter making sure it does not go onto the lens itself. Now when you grip the filter, you will not be gripping the lens as well since it will be slightly higher. Gently pull the filter forward in case as some have suggested the threads do not go all the way to the filter's base, and need to be brought forward to reconnect with the threads in the the lens.

I use those thin rubber gloves (like the medical people use) to hold them while turning. I don't actually put them on. Just use them over the place I need to grab.

I also have various filter wrenches, but they do not work as well as the gloves.
