I was just told by my optometrist not to clean glasses with Nikon alcohol wipes. Should that also apply to camera lenses?

Only clean your optics with a solvent when a Rocket blower or soft brush doesn't accomplish the task.
Modern optics typically have special coatings to counter flare, glare etc.
These coatings can be damaged by strong solvents and aggressive frequent cleaning.

I've had excellent success with Zeiss Lens wipes which come precoated...
But I only use them are seriously soiled lenses...
Here is what Zeiss uses in their Lens Wipes...
https://www.zeiss.com/content/dam/Vision/Vision/International/Pdf/en/data-sheet-for-zeiss-lens-cleaning-wipes.pdf

btw, I also downloaded the OSA data sheet on Zeiss Liquid lens cleaner...
It is the most pricey alcoholic beverage ever put on the market...
The Zeiss Liquid lens cleaner is only 3% ethanol in an aqueous solution... Yep, that pretty pricey Vodka... lol

Hope this helps plumbbob1
All the best with your glasses and your photographic journey...

Let me guess....he/she suggested a BETTER alternative. One that he/she profited from. NONE of them are a good idea. As a person that has worn glasses for 50 years, it's better than nothing at all. If my choice is an alcohol wipe or rinsing in a muddy river.......

There are a ton of videos on how to properly clean camera lenses. Do I have alcohol wipes in my bag? Yes, for those stupid emergencies. Things just happen. I'm still a boy scout.

Interesting that the English and several others list fewer ingredients than quite a few others that also contain C 10-16 alkyl....... that I’m sure are surfactants (Think “detergents”) along with perfluroalkyl ether that might be.

I have to wonder how likely it be for Nikon to sell something to clean lenses that would damage an $8000 lens.

I use these, which might be the same.

Of course, I agree with Thomas's conservative suggestions... but there are happenings where we are not equipped to do the right thing. This is when having a low-cost UV or Clear filter attached to the lens is worthwhile; one can blow your breath on the lens filter and wipe with the edge of your T-shirt. Sounds crude and it is, but better than missing a one-chance photo.

My understanding is you don't use paper bases products. Over time, they can scratch the coatings.

Zeiss lens wipes from Walmart, for me.

When necessary, mine are ordered from B&H by the box. A photo brush is used first when necessary.

I have always used the microfiber cloths given to me by my optometrist.

This is one of the reasons that militate in favor of using clear, high quality filters on lenses. If a filter gets scratched, just throw it away and get a new one…and spare damage to your lenses. There have been several discussions on UHH about clear filters, but I and my peers have never noticed any issues with image quality caused by clear filters.

I avoid alcohol to clean any lenses. Water has worked fine so far. I don't mean using a dishwasher, just a damp cloth.

Did he mention an alternative? When I go to the eye Dr. They ALWAYS spray my plastic lenses with a solution, and wipe with a tissue or soft cloth. The solution has alcohol in it.
