While in Boothbay at the Gardens stop at the Trevett Country Store (less than 1 mile away). Also drive out through East Boothbay to Ocean Point Shore Road. You'll never regret it. Eat at either the Ocean Point Inn or Lobsterman's Wharf in East Boothbay.

We lived in Boothbay for 17 years. Maine is most famous for its scenic rugged rocky coast. My all time favorite locations in order of gorgeousness are as follows IMHO:

1. Camden/Rockport/Owls Head. Camden is the most picturesque village with much to see as harbor, mount Beaty, etc. Adjacent Rockport is small and quaint with a picturesque steep hillside narrow harbor full of boats. The nearby Owl's Head lighthouse off Rockport is very nice and accessible. Lot to see and do in this area.

2. Boothbay Harbor. This is the epitome of beautiful harbor full of lobster boats and a rugged rocky coastline. Take Route 96 to the end at ocean point, park in the small parking lot and turn left to walk the rocky coast for nearly a mile. You need to be in reasonably good physical condition for this awesome view and experience. It requires lots of ups and downs to make your way along the coast. It was my favorite thing to do for exercise for 17 years. Then take the loop road along the peninsula tip back to town. Next you should take Route 27 loop road on Southport Island for more great scenic views.

While here in the area you should go to the Pemaqid Point Lighthouse accessible from the village of Damariscotta. It's my personal favorite of all the lighthouses in Maine. It sits atop a beautiful rocky outcrop.

3. Bar Harbor. Natural scenic beauty abounds here. Acadia Nat'l Park is beautiful, but I was never impressed much with Cadillac Mountain. This park actually consists of several separate areas. One of the better parts is on the Schoodic Peninsula farther up the coast near Winter harbor. More beautiful rocky coast here.

4. Portland Head Lighthouse. No visitor to Maine should pass up this one. It's used for artwork on all of the calendars.

This does not mean there aren't many other beautiful places in Maine -- there absolutely are. Most of the best is along the coastline of Fjord like fingers. Places like Ogunquit, York Beach, and Kennebunkport farther south come to mind also. Maine is a beautiful state for many reasons like beautiful lakes and inland rivers as well.

In this day and age everyone uses online maps to travel, but I think I still would want paper maps to travel Maine. My ever present companion was always DeLorme's Maine Atlas set of 70 exploded grid maps. You should not leave home without one. I'm sure it's still available on line.

I don't know how much time you have booked for your Maine vacation, but I must warn you that travel in Maine is slow and time consuming. If you travel the interstates you will see nothing. All the good stuff is off small two lane roads full of small towns and slow speed limits.

Pemaquid Point Light is especially recommended. Also Blue Hill and Stonington. Finally, the Maritime Museum in Searsport may not be highly photogenic, but is worthwhile.

I am going to Maine for a couple weeks and will be staying in the Rockland area. It will be a photography vacation. I am planning on photographing at lighthouses, the Coastal Maine Botanical Garden and on Monhegan Island. I am interested in your insights and advice on other locations and sights that I should include as I travel around Mid-coast Maine. Thank you.

Along with all the other suggestions:

Pemaquid Point Lighthouse - especially at low tide.

Schoodic Peninsula, Winter Harbor, ME - I believe this is a part of Acadia Nat'l Park.

Have fun.

You might want to see if there is a workshop at the Maine Media Workshops and College in Rockport. They accommodate all skill levels, although some require a portfolio. I took a course there many years ago and it was first rate. Other folks on the site have provided excellent suggestions in Maine.

One other point. So far we're having a record-breaking season with the pent-up demand after the pandemic shutdowns and with the new-found attractiveness of outdoor activities. As a result many places are fully booked through the end of the season; I'd try and make as many advance reservations as possible.

Castine is charming.Mt Kahtadin and Acadia NP which you probably already have on your list. The best parts of Maine are down the”fingers”. Get off the main roads. Be prepared for the opportunities fog provides!

Many great suggestions. I'd add the Maine Maritime Museum in Bath. Not far off route 1; they have on cruises including several lighthouses from the water and a land-based tour of Bath Iron Works.

D^mn, I may hve to go back to Maine. Y'all make it sound wonderful. I remember going up once when I was studying at Yale Law Shool in New Haven. My wife and I spent couple of days exploring the Maine coast. Of course, that was 60 years ago and with my fading memory I can never be sure if what I remember was really there. And so many places that we missed. Harry

And a few eating places you do not want to miss. Jordan Pond House is In Acadia and they have popovers and tea in the afternoon on the lawn. The Dry Dock in Portland is a dive but have great lobster rolls and to die for Bloody Mary's. Southport has a great sefood place that is reasonable with the usual lobsters, clams and scallops.
