I'm sure many of you have experiences with Alaska cruises, I haven't been on one, am looking for some advice. Would like to combine a cruise with train or coach between Vancouver and Fairbanks. Suggestions on cruise line, best ports, excursions to take/not take. Planning on going 2022.
Thanks.

Don't. Spend my, oops, your money on interior Alaska. Been on the cruise scene once. Not again. You can always take a day charter out of Seward or other small ports. JMHO.

Given the covid restrictions regarding U.S. citizens going in and out of Canada, there’s no way to be assured you’d be able to take a train to Vancouver to pick up your ship for a cruise. You may wish to sail out of Seattle or Bellingham instead. Your cruise ship will make stops in various towns in SE Alaska and you will have enough time to take in local cruises or flightseeing tours. You’ll be able to take lots of photos of glaciers, as well. If your cruise ship takes you to Seward, you can elect to take the train to Anchorage. That is very scenic. In Anchorage you can rent a car (preferably an SUV) and spend some time touring the interior, at least inasmuch as the road system will allow you to do so. At least you will be able to pick and choose where you want to go and for how long, and you’ll be able to go places that the canned tours don’t. Then when you’re finished, you can fly back home. The best thing about doing Alaska on your own is that you don’t have to worry about schedules and trying to do or see something within the time allotted by a cruise company or any of their contracted land tour companies.

Thanks chief, thought about that, keep hearing about shortage of rental cars. Maybe by then that would be a better option.

The way this pandemic is going, I think I'll just put everything on hold for now. Thanks

Going deep sea or inland salmon fishing is one option.

Haven't managed to make it on a cruise yet (either before or after COVID), but have visited Alaska multiple times, most recently a couple weeks ago. Even though it might be harder now, did manage to rent a car (from the manager of the motel we stayed in in Anchorage), drove around to parks, etc. There are beautiful ferries you can take as well as the trains. Glacier Bay National Park was one of my favorites (took a ferry ride there and it was fantastic). Also out of Seward. Stayed in many different places, including a Bed and Breakfast outside of Homer where we awoke to moose grazing in the yard. Nothing beats being able to go where you want and visiting this beautiful state. Denali is beautiful but you have to take a bus in.
