Toying with upgrading my ancient 7d (original) which is 8yo.Can't decide between the R6 or the 5D4. Since the cost is the same don't know which. Reason is mostly better low light performance. Which One?

Following, I would think R6 newest technology. But I love 5DMKIV.

First, even as Canon's best and last DSLR, don't consider buying an EOS 5DIV 'new'. It's not new enough, find the used price and factor that into your decision. Only if the EOS 5DIV goes on sale again around $2000 is it a worthwhile 'new' purchase.

Next, the magic of a major pixel upgrade should drive your decision. The R6 at 20MP isn't a big enough jump, especially that your giving up your 1.6x crop factor.

Next, the EOS 5DIII is getting to be ancient too, but with the glut of used copies of this extremely popular camera now running around $600-$800 used, consider if a bit of shopping and a modest outlay for 22MP full-frame pushes your bigger decision down the road a few years.

Finally, you've got a lot of years from your EOS 7D. Buying the EOS R5 could easily stretch even longer in years at 45MP.

R6. 20 MP versus 30. Everything else is better, especially low light and high ISO performance. I've heard the R6 is better than my R5 as its pixel pitch is bigger. I shoot astro a fair bit and will have to get an R6 eventually for this reason.

Love my 5D IV, but it's the last of a long line of Canon SLR and DSLR's that I've the pleasure of owning. Mirrorless is the future, and the future is here.

Don't discount the EOS R - it's a terrific 30mp mirrorless. Similar control layout to R5

Another way to make your decision. Subtract the sell-job ballyhoo from the image quality of each camera. If about the same, why spend hundreds if not thousands of dollars to own the latest shiny thing?

Tough Choice. According to the testing at Photons to Photos (https://www.photonstophotos.net/Charts/PDR.htm), the dynamic range and low light performance is almost identical, so no winner there. The new price is the same, but there’s a big difference in resolution - 30.4MP for the 5D4 and 20.1MP for the R6. So the question is do the advantages of a newer mirrorless body and other features (such a faster frame rate) outweigh the big difference in resolution? I have a 5D4 and have shot an R6 and personally I wouldn’t trade because of the loss of resolution, but if I were starting out fresh maybe I’d have a different opinion. Now the R5 is a different story if it fits your budget. If I were to move to a MILC, i would want to be able to afford the new RF lenses, some of which are superb (but expensive). Here’s a good comparison of specs and features of the 5D4 and R6: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/compare/Canon_R6_vs_Canon_5D_Mark_IV/BHitems/1573880-REG_1274705-REG

How much and how often do you CROP ??

Used 5D IV much cheaper and better to crop.

The R6 = pathway to the future......

Another approach, given your cautionary view: Avoid early-adaptor syndrome. Wait a year or two, or even longer, until bugs addressed and resolved while the camera-makers introduce an improved version or two.

Meanwhile, enjoy your DSLR knowing that this camera, now perfected, captures fine images (evidently the same as with the MILC).

For me instead of buying right after introduction or buying very late or used. I would buy the camera at the point in time when I can get a brand new one at the lowest price.

If you're getting new lenses, why not consider a Sony α7R IV - 61 mp, and the fastest AF on the planet. With downsampling, there will be no noise. There is a lot to like about this camera, and the Zeiss lenses to go with it are pretty darn great. It's a little more than your budget, but it is in a class of it's own.

The EOS R5 has changed how we think about mirrorless, how we think about photography, how we think about life.

Anyone ever say that about any model from Sony?

Thought one. Just an idea: the used market is full with DSLR’s but not the mirror less. I got my DSLR almost 50% cheaper than original with about 6500 shutter count.
How much would I trust a mirror less? I hear overheating and other stuff.....don’t forget the lenses.....

Firstly, I had a wonderful Canon 7D and I loved it.
Now I have both a Canon RP and a Canon 5DIV and I love them both.
However, like ImageMeister said, "How much and how often do you CROP ??"

Because of my Canon RP I now lust after a Canon R5, Canon R5II, or a Canon R3 with all new "L glass".
IMHO, overall CHG_CANON and TriX have the best advice if you are staying with Canon.
However, If Cost Is No Object, Gene51 makes a very good point about the "Sony α7R IV - 61 mp, and the fastest AF on the planet."
Also, discussions (bench racing) like this make me think, dream and . .
Smile,
