And how many great young American volunteers have died there.
Looks like one foreigner dies and the news freaks out while ignoring true heroes.

...he's *not* a soldier. As much respect as I, a combat vet, have for our troops, I find this incident to be completely reportable. His work is stellar, he's just like Walter Cronkite (who glidered in on D-Day) in his risk-taking to get the story/shot...and he joins those fallen like Ernie Pyle. So I just think it's a worthwhile note in the history of journalism. <shrug> The *reporting* of his demise does not in any way make our soldier's deaths less important...

...jeeze man...you equate the entire journalistic community (and war correspondents KIA) with elitists? Not to mention those photographers who admire the guy's work? I notice you're Airborne? Proud of that? Get shot at? Crap, I guess *I'm* an elitist!

If you take the time to read the link you may find the photos he made were as good as it gets. Truly talented photo journalist. Please everyone keep your political prejudices to yourselves on a site about photography.

good response. Some people can only see events from their perspective.

Photojournalism in war-torn areas is among the most dangerous lines of work for shooting a camera is far different than having a gun to shoot back with.

What I find strange however is how the media then chooses what stories they want to produce based on what buttons of the public they can push along with what fits their corporate agenda. There are some real hell-holes in the world that need to be brought into the public light such as were genocide is committed and in areas like the Congo where people scratching a living are caught between warring rebels and the oppressive government and its military. Those are the real stories that need to be in the world news instead of what flavor ice cream the President is eating.

Photojournalism in war-torn areas is among the mos... (show quote)

You're right, of course. Lump it all into "journalism"...I was in that culture for my education and there are quite a few things that stuck with me. One was; "...somebody writes it, somebody edits it, and somebody owns the newspaper." (Or whatever outlet). That's how our capitalistic world turns, and it's not the best...but we've seen how the alternative goes, eh?

...yup, if at all "after the shot" sitting ducks for sure. Then again, you want to silence that gun shooting at *you*...lol...and vice versa, eh?

I enjoyed taking pictures while I was in the Marines. I guess I’m an “elitist vet”.
