Searching here for threads regarding this backup package, the most recent found were from a year ago or so. I was wondering if anyone here is using Acronis' latest version on an M1 Mac (apparently the latest is built to work on that) and if so, how you like it.

TIA

I get an email from 'Ask Leo.' a geek that used to work with Micor soft and that's the back up program he uses. I haven't heard from him in a while but he always said the single most important thing you can do is back up your entire system and keep it some place else that is safe from floods, tornadoes etc

I did a little check. His name is Leo Notenboom, yah I know how could I forget that? He doesn't have email anymore but he's on the better known social media sites Go to his web site and ask him Google 'Ask Leo' and you will get his website. Good hunting

I use Acronis, but not on an M1 Mac, and not the latest version. I do like how it copies everything so that the copy can be substituted in the computer and that the computer will boot from it. The computer has a 1TB SSD and I make the backup onto a spinning disk drive figuring I can replace an SSD by copying from the hard drive the same way. And I have had an SSD die.

Time to make a new backup. Thanks for reminding me.

I used to use the latest version on a Win10 desktop. The antivirus portion is a little intrusive, so when I bought a new XPS desktop I canceled my account. Now I copy my data drive with robocopy. I never made an OS image, reinstalling Windows is too easy.

Reinstalling Windows is a minimum of 1 week solid work for me, and if I had to do it I would also lose a heap of stuff I forgot about or couldn't be bothered researching again plus not counting the time it took to research and install stuff over the last 5 years. I can only assume that you have very little on your computer.

It has saved my life twice, once following a hard drive crash, and once following a disastrous Window "update." Both times, I was able to recover my entire operating system and applications in a few hours. Reinstalling Windows is easy enough, but then there are all the apps & settings to deal with.

I've been an Acronis user on my Windows computers for approximately 15 years. It has saved me from disaster quite a few times. I have redundant backups of 2 NVMe, 2 SSD and 2 HD drives on 4 external drives.

The antivirus continues to be active and running even when it is turned off in the Acronis protection screen. I have disabled all of the parts that I can, yet there are some that I can not get to. If I could go back to previous versions for just the back-up/recovery functions I would in a heart beat.

Spinning drives are good for backups.
But one drive for backup is not safe.
2 or 3 backup drives are much safer.
BTW I use 5 drives for my backup's.
Safety in numbers.
Any drive can go bad.
You can also make a mistake! OOPS
It happens.

Acronis has two versions. One version is for home and the other is a more professional version..

I would suggest you purchase the more professional version. The professional version for a work station is only about $80 per license and can be found cheaper.

The "True Image" home version is ok but it does not have the power and reliability of the pro version. Acronis does not directly support the home version.

Go for Macrium Reflect... faster, simpler and very good software. I have been using it on my company for years with no issues.

www.macrium.com

Their home version is free with very few restrictions, notably it won't send email messages when the job is completed and allow only one job instead of multiple jobs for different backups (although you can do them manually if you want). Using the workstation version (59.00) you will have messaging, unlimited jobs and a protection against ramsonware.

Cheers

Well thanks, but it would seem they do not offer product for Macs, and as I specified in my OP, I have an M1 MacBook...

Here is another option if you have easy access to remove a hard drive

https://www.startech.com/en-us/hdd/sdock2u313r

This is a drive duplicator. Plug one drive in the source socket and one in the destination and it will make a duplicate image. I have used this model for years and it works fine. Can also use it as a holder for external dives when connected to a computer. Don't forget the difference between source and destination, or you are not going to like the results!

I see in the complaints that someone said that it wouldn't copy to a 1 TB SSD. I had no problem. When my 512GB SSD got too full, I copied it to a 1TB SSD. Then expanded the volume to use the entire drive. And that is what my main PC is currently using.

I keep the side panel on my PCs loose so I can easily access the hard drive when I want to make a backup. Just make sure you don't try to duplicate a larger drive onto a smaller drive.

I also use Acronis, but this method is really easy.

Also, the price on startech.com is the highest price you will find for it. Much better prices elsewhere.

Don't know if newer models offer anything that mine can't do.

Yes! These things are practically a necessity.
