Hi, I have a canon 7d mark II. I'm still learning about it. when shooting sports I found that it was not recording 10 frames per second. someone told my my sd card was not fast enough. someone else said to use cf cards because they are faster. I order one to try. but I don't have a cf card reader to plug into a usb port to watch the photos. can anyone recommend a good reader. would be nice if it would read sd and cf cards.
thanks

there is read and writing speed....most of time you see like 120MB/s this is the reading speed, writing speed is the most of time slower.....card reader you can find in the store or online.......

Have you ordered something already? If no, stop and investigate the relevant details.

From your post, you're only using an SD card now? What is the brand and specs of that card? If unsure, just take a phone picture and post the SD card label.

When you say you're not getting 10 fps, what is your estimate of what you are experiencing? How does this slower amount impact your photography?

Beyond the types / speed of the card(s) in the camera, you have to have the camera configured for High-Speed Continuous Shooting. You also need to pick JPEG or RAW, but you cannot pick both for 10 fps. You can get a longer multi-second burst of JPEG beyond a 10 fps vs RAW.

Finally, for your CF cards, you can spend a lot of money on large and fast cards. But, for an EOS 7DII, you're still limited to UDMA 7 / Type I. There's no need to buy more speed than the camera can utilize. The EOS 7D II dates back 2014. The fastest cards of that era were about 160 MB/s for write. A $40 card such as the SanDisk 32GB Extreme Pro CF is probably the best mix of price, speed and capacity without overspending for cards faster than the camera can write. Think of a car with a max speed of 90 mph. Putting faster tires on the car still won't make it faster than 90 mph.

I purchased a Insignia from Best Buy a couple of years ago. It has slots for 5 different type of cards, CF & SD plus Micro SD are among them. I don't think I ever filled a card so I haven't used of the other card slots yet. Anyway it was around $20-30 back then. Does the job. You can always plug the camera into your computer to move the files for now. Hope you get your shooting speed after the card. CHG_CANON is correct about camera settings affect the cameras FPS count. Even the newest big buck cameras released in the last year from what I understand.

I had a Canon 7D MII as well as a 5D MIII. I shot with CF and SD cards in each camera. I have two Transcend RDP8 readers - one black & one white. I've used the readers for 9 years without one issue. However, they are not (now) the fastest readers available, but for me they are fine. Probably no longer available, but Transcend has many newer offerings as well as many other branded readers. Make sure you know which connections your computer has. (USB 2.0, 3.0 3.1, ...)

As an alternative, just connect your camera directly to the computer to download images. I also have the 7Dii, and do not ever remove the card.
I know there are differing views on the Forum as to the appropriate way to download images, but I prefer direct camera connection.

If you are not updated on the firmware of the camera then you are probably only getting 7 frames per second. Try updating to the latest and try again!

thanks for all the input. I use a extreme pro 32gb sd card now. I think it has 95mb,s I shoot kids baseball and trying to do some birds in flight. I here the shutter click 3 or 4 times but only get 2 images. I ordered a extreme pro 32gb cf card.

hi, I had to send the camera in for repair a couple months ago. I guess they would have done the update.

Try using <quote reply> going forward to focus your replies to specific comments.

The card SD card speed is fast enough for more than just 3 or 4 images per second. It would seem your camera settings are the issue rather than the card. If you have an unedited JPEG, try attaching and storing so we can see the camera settings from the EXIF.
