After having worked in the photographic retail biz for a few years, I can say that with very few exceptions, one should avoid any product with the word "Pro" in the product name.
The real way to tell professional-quality stuff is usually the price!

Oh, don't say that! Now those $29.95 tripods will cost $799.99. :D

Now that I'm retired, I look for bargains. When working, I owned Gitzo and Bogens and they are darned good. About a year ago I took a chance on a sub $50 Dolica "Proline" and I'll be darned, it's pretty good too!

More and more I am seeing (mainly on ebay of course) but also in retail outlets such ads as

"Professional tripod" £25 ($40)

or

"PRO studio flash units" £65 ($104)

Pro, are you kidding, do people really believe for one moment (or fall for) that just because someone has written "professional" on something that it really is?

Been my arguement all along. Why do you suppose that the rank and file retail camera retail outlets , in the main, show only two manufacturers that rumor has it are the same?

Yes there are by the number of them that queue outside Apple retail outlets to get hooked into the next Apple incarnation. Only Apple could get away with Releasing the ipad mini using old tech. from the i phone 4 and a screen from the ipad ll and charging £150 over its closest rivals. no USB no HDMI out, no Flash player. but it will sell in it's millions.

They are targeting entry-level users who may be more gullible for this type of deceptive advertising. Too bad. Not sure if it is getting worse or we are just seeing a higher volume of the same type of crappy practices by more sellers. If people want low-price, low quality merchandise, they only need to visit their closest Walmart. At least they can see the stuff they buy.

What I used to love were the morally flexible camera stores who would pop a low ball price on, say a Nikon but then sell it only as a "Kit". The "kit" might include film, batteries, neck strap, instruction manual. warranty and so on. Of course legitimate outfits acknowledged that all, or most, "kit" components were the items which came straight from the factory - no extra charge.

If you look up the definition of "Professional" you'll find this word relates to people who perform certain jobs for pay on a regular basis. The tools they buy and use for their jobs has a huge window ranging from cheap to expensive, depending on the quality of the "Pro". Sometimes cheaper tools perform as well as "Pro" tools.
There really is no definition of a Pro tool in marketing, but all the quality "Pro's" know what they are.
The word "Pro" might even be a shortened version of Problematic or Profane, and many other words.
