I left California 20+ years ago and only one. I haven't been back since. It used to be the "Golden State" and San Francisco was "The City". San Francisco is now a dangerous garbage pit. I can't describe the "Golden State" without this post being moved to The Attic.

Glad he didn't think of tethering the tripod to his leg. That would not have ended well. As he said, expensive as it is, the gear can be replaced. He could not.

A clever person could improvise something with an electric livestock fence energizer / charger. Non lethal as well.

Sadly the end of San Francisco. No more law enforcement admitted by the Police.

SF is still relatively safe, but like anywhere it is unwise to draw attention to yourself and make yourself a target.

I’ve lived here since 1996, and feel safe wandering the streets, day and night, but staying low key is sensible. My camera bags don’t look like camera bags. It pays not to advertise.

My wife used to work for a jewelry company downtown and regularly had to ship stuff. She just dressed down and wandered up the street with as much as $100,000 of jewelry in her scruffy backpack.

Never a problem.

Street smarts are useful.

"Relatively" is a weasel word. Relative to what. The south side of Chicago. What neighborhoods are you "comfortable to wandering the streets at night?" You can't walk Market or Mission without substantial risk.

If you came to San Francisco in 1996 you can't have any idea what The City used to be like.

Outrageous to say the least. My first thought is to carry a 9MM and shoot the SOB but that's a bad idea, I'd wind up the one being prosecuted.

Huh I have lived in San Diego and many other cities. I live in SW Ohio now. I can walk down a street with my D5oo and a 200-400 f4 on my Gitzo systematic series 5 tripod and chit chat with whom ever comes along. Funny how relatively is such a relative word.

Headed for the attic: California resident here. Prop 47 reduced the penalties for many crimes and re-defined what violent crimes meant in some sexual assaults. With reduced bail, and in some cases, no bail, perpetrators are released, quite literally, before the cops finish the reports. Residential burglars are not seeing significant jail time. An associate of mine from my LE days told me that there are crews who are doing burglaries while people are home, knowing that most of the victims will take refuge in their bedrooms while they pilfer the house.

There are now attempts to decriminalize other crimes as well. The DA in Los Angeles, former DA in SF, no longer seeks gang enhancements or gun enhancements. Just yesterday, there was a report of a drug stores closing stores in the SF area due to organized theft rings. Sadly, Cal was a very safe place not long ago. I'm not all that knowledgeable about photography, but was in law enforcement for 35 years. Murders are up double digits in Los Angeles, and I imagine in SF as well. We are going back to the softer sentencing on crimes that was prevalent in the 1970s, and the results will be the change...increased crime.

For those of you who may be inclined to use some sort of deadly force to protect your goods, this was not a robbery. It was a grand theft. Robbery is taking something from someone by use of force or fear....my quick read was that this was a "snatch and grab." Protect yourself from imminent serious bodily injury, but do not use deadly force to protect your gear...

Sad state of affairs.

Twenty five years is enough to form an impression. My wife grew up here. My 94 year old mother-in-law doesn’t express concern, just gets on with her life.

Many of the comments on this thread are from people who have no idea what they are talking about.

Personally I’d be much more concerned in Manhattan, Boston, Las Vegas, Los Angeles or New Orleans. Even Podunk Iowa!

Regardless of gender, race, creed or religion we need excellence.

Since this is your statement I have a question. How do we achieve excellence by not making people responsible for their own decisions? I can rob and not go to jail? I guess I have wasted my life in Podunk Ohio
