Is the traffic light a compositional positive or a detractor?

Detractor, imo, but some others may like it

Thank you. I knew to ask because others have stated this before. For me, it adds a bit to the depth of field and helps demonstrate the urban scene. So far, I stand alone.

Okay I'll jump in. I liked the traffic lights, as you say it gives an idea of background. Have used the red light to contrast the colours before. Each to his own.

I would've moved a little to the right (or cropped out the traffic signal), got my kid/best guy/gal/whatever to stand on the sidewalk there, with back to the camera, looking at the statue, being perfectly still, & go with 10 seconds. Then again, perhaps having people moving about in front of the statue would work. Ah, the joys of composition.

Our eyes always go to the brightest object in the image so for me they are the biggest distraction in the shot. Everything left of the park bench in my opinion is not needed in this shot. The fountain us the subject it seems for this shot so make it the only real subject and try to remove the distractions when you are composing your shot and make your point of getting sharp focus on it.
