I'm going to Iceland on a photography trip for 11 days with Natural Habitat. We'll be there in July. I have a Nikon D600 and a D5500. Any suggestions as to lenses I should bring and do I need a tripod?

Thanks

Your destination is a photographer's paradise.
Natural Habitat sounds good to me as far as being guided to great locations is concerned. For lenses in Iceland I covered my reach between 18mm and 600mm.
Tripod? How steady are your hands? I did not take one but wished I had done so on some occasions. Good luck and enjoy the fun.
Btw, if there is a chance to take in Greenland too, TAKE IT, trust me.

I only took an 18-200 and a 50mm in a messenger bag when we went. (traveled light)
Watch the wind!!! In December it was pushing 25-40 MPH most days.
During our stop at Dyrhólaey the winds were almost knocking people over.
I didn't take a tripod, too much trouble on the tour bus. But it would have come in handy for the Northern Lights!!!
I'd suggest wind/waterproof slacks & jacket. NO JEANS!
Take lots of memory cards and a few spare batteries. My phone/battery chargers (dual voltage) worked on the 230v they use there with the two prong adapters I got at Target. MAKE SURE your electronics are dual voltage, otherwise you'll need a voltage reducer as opposed to frying your electronics.

Enjoy the trip.
We want to go back.

Let me know if you need someone to help carry your bags. I could be available. If you are limited on lenses, be sure to take wider angle lenses for the vistas you will enjoy. Take at least one telephoto lens but I suspect most of what you will want to capture will require a wider angle lens. Good luck and good shooting.

You don't say if this is a teaching/learning trip or not (I have to confess to not being familiar with Natural Habitat's outings) but standard advice always includes a reminder to review the material sent to you by your hosts. Any guidance they might give would trump any from us to make sure that you don't find yourself standing and watching while the rest of the group gets a once-in-a-lifetime image.

Thanks, wish I could take in Greenland also but didn't have the time. I have both a wide- angle and the Sigma 150-600 lense. I hate to bring a tripod but on your advice will. July has very long days and I'm thinking I might need it for evening shots.

Please do not take a tripod on a group trip, they have time restraints and you could cause an issue with a tripod. Check with your tour provider and see if they will visit the Puffin Islands or any wild life venues, if they are, take a telephoto. Otherwise take a wide zoom and a medium tele zoom for the wonderful landscapes provided.

Rgandel,
We went to Iceland in 2019 on a cruise so time was limited at locations e.g. 1 hour at a waterfall etc.
Took Nikon D5, 24-70 and 70-200 F2.8 Nikkors, with Lee filters. Carried in a Lowepro Toploader, Lens, and filter case.
I wore a fleece with Goretex jacket and shoes with winter trousers for late August early Sept and it was warm but you are going north so expect 4 seasons in 1 day maybe even 1 hour. Had a 4 series Gitzo tripod, suspended
camera bag from tripod when shooting (mostly waterfalls, the whale watching was a failure as no whale were scene but used the 70-200 on DX mode giving 300 F2.8). We upped our fitness levels for the terrain, as it was rough walking (volcanic grit etc). Covid 19 pandemic stopped us returning this summer but hopefully next year as we are booked on another cruise to Norway and Iceland. Wonderful country and very photogenic but be prepared for bad weather photography. Did not do bird photography, mostly volcano and waterfalls.
Have a great time.

Rgandel, we went to Iceland in July 2016. I took my Canon T4i, 10-22, 17-85 and 75-300, no tripod. I used all three lenses but mostly the 17-85. The long lens was primarily for shooting puffins. The weather will vary across the temperature and moisture range. Travel light, bring good walking/hiking shoes and layered clothing. I used a camera backpack rather than a shoulder bag and highly recommend doing that as well.

Going in October, just bought this on the recommendation of a friend who went, https://store.naturescapes.net/nature-photo-guides-iceland-bundle/
No Northern lights in July but you might want a monopod, with a wrist strap mine doubles as a hiking pole in rough terrain

wireloose,
interested in your monopod that can double as a walking stick, please could you provide details? I have looked in the past and found nothing, sounds useful!

Sirui P-326, there may be newer/better options, I bought it in 2014 according to Amazon. Added an Arca clamp. It’s small and light and despite the weight rating has always worked as a trekking pole for me. I have trekking poles but they don’t go in a carry on, as this does.
