I have a Nikon D5600 with a 70 to 300 kit lens. I am looking for a teleconverter so I can take pictures of loons just a little too far away. It doesn't seem worth the price for a teleconverter on a kit lens. Does anyone have a teleconverter for that camera they want to sell?

I am not a fan of teleconverters. They take a good lens and down grade the sharpness.

This is not a valid idea on multiple technical points:

1) Most 70-300 zooms are physically incompatible with teleconverters / extenders. That is, they cannot be physically attached. Or, the zoom motion of the internal aspects of the lens are impeded by attachment of the TC that literally 'extends' inside the attached lens. Impeding the movement of the lens internals can damage the TC, or lens, or both.

2) Most 70-300 lenses have a maximum effective aperture of f/5.6 when at the maximum 300mm focal length. Adding a 1.4 TC and the loss of 1-stop of light makes the lens an effective f/8 lens. See note 7 on page 306 of your D5600 manual. This camera cannot autofocus a lens combination at f/8 or smaller.

To obtain more 'reach' you'll need to consider a longer lens and / or a lens compatible with a TC and the autofocus capabilities of your camera.

Thank you very much for your response. I kind of expected that. I will have to save and buy a bigger telephoto lens.

Look at used models, especially third-party zooms.

One option is to Optimize the native IQ of your 70-300 and CROP and use AI pixel enlargement software if needed to maintain the pixel resolution properties for larger prints - since a tele extender/converter is not compatible with your camera/lens.

For not much more than the price of a Nikon teleconverter you can buy an excellent condition Tamron or Sigma 100-400 f/4.5-6.3 with a 600mm equivalent on your camera from MPB or KEH that would serve you very well. Neither lens weighs very much, I think about 40 ounces. Good luck.

I'm a hobbyist and have (a) a Nikon AF 80-200mm f/2.8 that has two focusing rings and a lens collar (newer version) and (b) a Kenko N-AF 1.4X Teleplus Plus Pro 300 DGX. For my very simple usage on a Nikon D3, the above combination provides "very acceptable IQ" on my camera screen, playback mode at 100% zooming-in.

Additionally, it's my understanding that a Nikon AF-S Teleconverter TC-14EII (1.4x) will NOT mount on any Nikkor AF 80-200mm f/2.8 lenses.

Lastly, it has been reported that Nikon AF-S Teleconverter, such as TC-14EII, can be mounted on a Nikon an AF-S 200-500mm f/5.6E lens, and that the above combinations provides "good IQ" with a Nikon D500, which assumes excellent "holding" techniques.

Before buy any teleconverter, it's best to check your "target lens" for compatibility purposes and IQ, ...at what specific distance, such as 80mm 135mm, 200mm, at what f stop-wide open or two stops down, and at what shutter speed-1/80 or 1/2,000 sec, if one were to handhold the camera/lens.

Here is the link to Nikon teleconverter compatability. If the lens is not listed on this chart no teleconverter will fit. Maybe this will help you in your quest for a lens. https://cdn-5.nikon-cdn.com/Assets/Common-Assets/Images/Teleconverter-Compatibility/en_US_Comp_chart.html

Good luck and good shooting.

I have a D5200, D5600, "AF-S DX NIKKOR 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR" and a "Kenko N-AF 1.4x Teleplus Pro 300" After a long internet search the Kenko 1.4 was the only teleconverter that was advertised to work with the 55-300 lens. Both cameras work with this lens supporting all automation Except that as the zoom approaches 300 the aperture must be set at f5.6 which becomes f8 for auto-focus to work.

N.B. This does not guarantee that it will work with your 70 to 300. This link provides at least some hope that it might as it is tested on the 5000 series up through 5500.

d3200prime, thanks for the timely updated Nikon teleconverter compatibility list, which should interest TC users. Based a cursory review of the different Nikon TC's, it appears that the TC with the most "lens compatibility (less limitations)" on that specific list is the Nikon TC-14E II, and not TC-14E III, TC-17E's and TC-20E II & III.

The Nikon TC-14EII is older version but with more compatible lenses. Why, and what is the "trade off"?
