I have multiple Nikons and a lot of heavy lenses. I shoot 90% of the time in RAW (NEF). But there are times the camera and the 70-200 2.8 is just too heavy or cumbersome. I am looking into a compact that shoots RAW, has good image reproduction and can fit into my shirt pocket. I have narrowed it down to the Nikon P7700 or the Canon S110. Both have pros and cons (smaller vs a tad larger, better screen and swivel, slow shutter lag etc.). Price point puts Canon in the lead, but that isn't a deal breaker. Does anyone out there have a positive opinion or negative opinion on which one to get?

Thanks for the heads-up. I wasn't aware of this camera. It sounds great.

I have a Canon G10, now updated last I heard was G12 but its a fabulous camera, does everything you want and has a reasonable zoom. Yes its a little bigger than the tiny compacts but most of the controls you use are easily accessible without having to browse through the complex menus some compacts have.

How about Nikon's new 70-200mm? Smaller, lighter, less expensive.

That will require a large shirt pocket! lol

The Nikon has the longer zoom - how important is this to you?
The Canon has only 5X zoom and starts at a wider angle. Which will be more useful, wide or long?
I've just ordered a P7700 because I think it comes closest to being a good all-rounder.

Check out Olympus XZ-1. Amazon has a killer deal at $199.

I purchased a Nikon Coolpix P7100 about a little over a month ago after trying/buying sending back a bunch of small sensor high-end compacts during my years-long search for the premium compact holy grail (including 3 Canon Gxx cameras and the Fuji X10. Although the P7100 has been superceded by the 7700, I chose the P7100 for 4 reasons, in order of importance (to me):
1. Optical viewfinder - very nice to have when you need 3-point stability (2 hands plus forehead) and/or the rear display is washed out by bright light) - I will never again have a camera that only offers the "stinky diaper" rear display/finder (arms extended out when composing/shooting - credit Kirk Tuck for the analogy).
2. 28-200 zoom lens - I rarely go over 100 or so, but the extra length is nice when you need it and there is no extra charge.
3. Sensor - Nikon has crammed more megapixels in the same size sensor in the 7700. If the sensor tech is such that they can get away with more pixels without excessive higher ISO noise, I would much rather have 10% cleaner images at 10Mpx than 10% more resolution (linear width & height) at 12Mpx.
4. Cost - I got my P7100 at Best Buy for $379, a $120 savings over the P7700.

The bottom line is that I really like the little Coolpix - it is definitely a keeper - the files are great for a small-sensor camera, it shoots RAW+JPG and the OOC jpgs are really good, with plenty of behind the scenes options to tailor them to your personal preferences; performance is snappy for a camera of this type, and it has Nikon's usual more than adequate supply of buttons and wheels typical of all of its "serious" cameras, providing direct access to every function you would normally need in a shoot without resorting to the menu system or trying to remember what wheel or button does what when moving from function to function. It adequately satisfies my need for quality imaging capabilities in low-profile situations and those times when I don't feel like hauling my D700 kit around. Unfortunately, it will not fit in a shirt pocket, but I don't see any shirt-pocketable cameras out there that meet my requirements for image quality, flexible controls, or view finder options.

Thanks to all for your responses. They were very informative and helpful. I think I am going to get the 7700. All I know is I always see a great shot when I don't have my camera...that has to stop! The 7700 will replace my iPhone as my "Wow - what a shot I wish I had my real camera with me moment!"

Look a the panasonic Fz 150 and Fz200. The 200 is the newer one, or the zs10 or zs20 which compact but all with great zoom lens. Each of them really do good jobs and great photos. These all all good cameras and this will give you a good selection to check out. Good as any cameras out there in my view! Go to amazon.com and look under panasonic cameras then point and shoot. Good descriptions and reviews.
