Just saw this on YouTube.
Excellent re-engineering of the ball head.

That is very nice. I'd thought the holes would be for locking the ball in place.

No, just to reduce weight. The ball is bigger in diameter than a standard ball.
It looks like this could be an improvement of the standard ball mount.

Yes, that is what I thought also and disappointed it DOES NOT ! You should be able to mechanically lock it in positions for panning. Also disappointed it does not have a built in leveling base ! 8-( Several of the newest heads now have leveling base.

It IS an innovative design which I applaud - they just have not finished it yet IMO.

I purchased the Peak Design Tripod. With a military discount was under $300. I just tried their ball head and it mimics this one at a lot less $$$. The only missing feature is the friction lock to slow down the ball head. It is also less weight and a smaller package. It does look nice but as I stated .. many more $$$.

1) Why do YouTubers in the photography ecosystem all imitate Peter McKinnon's opening schtick?

2) Looks interesting.

I've moved away from ball heads because of drifting issues with longer lenses.

Very cool. Like the concept and that someone is thinking outside the box. Not sure if it's the next best thing since sliced bread. But, I'm sure someone will come along and improve it even more.

I'll always have a use for a ball head but, moved on from them for long lenses as well. Bought a cheap Bieke gimbal for 20.00 off of Craigslist. Mainly to see if I'd even like it or get used to it. OMG. That's the way to go. I know it was cheap but, an experiment. A good one. Just ordered a CF gimbal and tripod. Let you know my thoughts.

Just to be clear, I don't generally use ball heads.
Both of my tripods have gimbals on them.
I have a couple of ball heads that I use in special situations but generally don't like them.

Nice ball head to be sure. Price is reasonable compared to those other quality bullheads in the market.. I’d consider it as an alternative to the Acratech GV2 that I’ve used for the last 3 or 4 years. That said, the Acratech Pano head in combination with their leveling base is hard to beat and lives on my tripod with no plans to vacate.

Why is everyone so gaga over ball heads?
