Best monitor for new M1 mac

Did a search and didn’t see anything. For mac users only please. I just pulled the trigger and purchased a new M1 Mac Mini with 16GB ram. I've been using a mid-2011 27" iMac since 2011. It only went to High Sierra and doesn’t have ML Graphics so more and more apps don’t work on it. I'd hoped to use the screen as my monitor for the mini but Apple stopped supporting that.

So I am researching monitors that I can AFFORD. I shoot full frame 27MB images.

So my questions:
1. Do I need 4k or can I go with 2K like my iMac monitor?
2. Do I need a monitor that supports Thunderbolt or just HDMI 2.0 (those are the specs for the mini).
3. I'd like a 27" because I have a sunscreen for that size already but is there an advantage of a 32" for photography?
4. Any real life suggestions (meaning you own it).

Remember cost is a factor - I'd like to be able to own a $1,600 BenQ but way out of my budget which is more like $400 at the top in.

Thanks in advance,

Ed

No. I recently purchased a 27" iMac, much for the same reason you're looking now. I couldn't update my 2010. This eliminated my ability to upgrade Ps. So, that drove the decision.

Bob, I was going to wait out the release of the M1 iMac but my current iMac is showing signs it is about to kick off so I decided on the mini which is probably the best value - education pricing at $1k, on an apple card for 12 months of interest-free payments. The reviews on the m1 are impressive even using Rosetta 2 and if it is universal wow. I have friends at Adobe and Pixelmator who I've talked to. Adobe has already ported ps and Lightroom is just around the corner. Pixelmator ported the first week the M1 was out.

Wirecutter recommends Dell UltraSharp U2720Q, a 4K monitor, $620 from Dell. When I check their website it was out of stock but they said it should be coming soon.

You

You won't get what makes you happy for $400. If you spend $400 and you're not happy with the monitor then you just poured $400 down a rat hole. Let's say for example you need to spend $1,000 to get a monitor that really performs and makes you happy. Now you have money well spent which will give you years of satisfaction.

At the Apple.com store, I Purchased the M1 MacBook Air and a 3840-by-2160 resolution, the 23.7-inch LG UltraFine 4K Display. A single Thunderbolt 3 cable (included) provides up to 85W of charging power to your MacBook Pro or MacBook Air with Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) ports*. The display has two Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) ports, and you can use one to connect to another 4K display. Three downstream USB-C ports (5 Gb/s) offer additional connectivity and power to compatible devices and accessories

I have not been disappointed. Works great. $699.95

Hi I just bought two ASUS VA27E 27" monitors. They were connected to my MacMini late 2021 running Catalina. They are now connected to a MacPro 5.1 mid-2010 running Catalina. You would probably be able to get 2 for your $400 budget. Of course I'd like a $1600 BenQ but can't get them in Costa Rica and couldn't afford them if I could.

No, Apple killed that process which was too bad as it was my first choice.

I bought a Viewsonic 27" VG2755-2K monitor 6 months ago and couldn't be happier - it is sharp and from my point of view (pun intended) 27" is about all the viewable real estate I can handle - I'm using it with my mid-2012 Mac mini (16 GB RAM)running Catalina. I calibrate it with a Spyder 5 Pro. I shoot 24mp RAW. This monitor is superb for my use. When I purchased it, the best price I got came to $300 with tax & shipping. I see that B&H is showing it for $260 (don't know about tax, etc.) I use PS, LR And Premiere Pro and for my budget, this certainly fills the bill. Good luck!

There are some good suggestions here for not to expensive monitors. Here is my somewhat surprising choice.
Three years ago I bought a Samsung S27D360 as a second monitor to my iMac. Around $300. When I calibrate both monitors with i1DISPLAY the color and contrast are almost identical. I can use either as my main monitor for adjusting photos. The imac retina display is slightly prettier but the colors are the same on both. I think I scored a really good deal. Checking on line I see it is still out there.
