Over the pandemic I have put together an album of photos of my extended family including scans of quite old photos. I wold like to make this available to the extended family in a way that included labels for the photos. In addition I wold like to have this be a living document so that others can add to it. There is a huge range of computer literacy and equipment in the family, as well as concerns about privacy. What would you suggest?

You can create a free album on Flickr. The album would be open to the public, unless you convince your family to create their own free accounts and then you can limit access to only those accounts.

For the descriptive info, you can title the images as well as adding descriptive text and keywords to allow searching / grouping the images by keywords. You can dynamically reorder the images by drag n drop within Flickr so new / ongoing images can be sorted into the existing album, when helpful.

flickr is a good choice for a documented album because it allows documentation to be added to the photos. As noted, you can limit viewing of the photos to selected friends or family, but they have to have a flickr account.

Another choice might be a website of your own. You can produce a page that would be protected by a username and password. Without that protection, anyone on the web could view the images and if an image is viewable, it can be copied. However, producing your own website takes some user knowledge. But it's always nice to learn something new.

using smug mug you can make the album(s) private. You give the family members the url to the album. Then it is private. Although they can not make changes to it, they can view it and/or download photos from it. You are probably better off on haviing one or two people who have the password making changes. they email any photo changes to you.

Too many cooks can spoil the broth.

Are you Mac or PC? Mac has Photos which can be set up for the purpose you wish and others may add to the album. It is free, but will only 'live on' as long as you have an active iCloud account/Mac account.

Also, Shutterfly. I have used it for many years for that same purpose.

I would use MS PowerPoint. Many folks have the software, it will do slides and videos along with music and if someone does not have the software a runtime version of the book can be made that will run on a pc without having PowerPoint installed.
You can password protect the file and send via one of the large file transfer online outfits.

You can build a quick and simple web page/site at wix. Com free. It can be password protected by site or page.

Do you have Amazon prime. Unlimited photo upload and you can also have password protected folders.

Smug mug...$55/year.

Not a good idea to have to many uploading, maybe you and one other. To easy to get things messed up.

If you have Lightroom Classic, you can use the book module. You can lay it out anyway you want and add what ever text you want. When you finish just export it as a PDF and share it. If the file size is to big to share via email you can use One Drive, Drop Box or another service to share it. If you really like it, you can have it printed as a book.
