Has any one used this thing. Is it worth buying. I use Carbonite for back up. Is it worth $50 for additional backup?

NO! Just use a flash drive for temporary use or external hard drive.

Canned stick with software to grab images.
What about the rest of your files, like PDFs, Docs, etc?

I haven't used thumb drives yet. I backup to multiple local external drives and Carbonite (disaster recovery).
I could run my backups to a USB fob, but they are CCDs (Charge Coupled Devices) and not the greatest for long term archival storage. Fine if done (used) on a regular basis, but I wouldn't trust them for sticking in a drawer for years.
Photo Stick? I'll transfer what I want, including other important files. But photo sticks are probably good for "non-computer people" who only want to save their images.

One of these rare 1-word search topics that returns several UHH threads with a consistent theme.

My understanding is that a photostick is a "smart" usb storage device. Meaning it selects photos and backs them up. For a few dollars more you could get an external hard drive that would do the same thing but have far more storage space...

Yup - Contains a <auto-run> program that searches one's hard drive for images and copies them to the stick.

They seek out every photo in your computer even those you didn’t even know you had. Otherwise it’s easy to copy those photos to other flashdrives and give them as gifts to other members of your family. I gave them to my children along with a viewer that turns on when they enter the room and off when they leave. Finally everyone gets to see your photos.🤓

Easier to "copy", especially if all the photos are under one "root" directory and not scattered all over the hard drive. The photo stick may come in handy for people who are not organized.

I wouldn’t consider it to be a good solution.
The max size is 128gig. Most here would need many times the size.
A single thumb drive isn’t a very secure way to back up.

It’s best to get your own drives for back und do some reading on how.

I don't have a million images like many people do, and yet my PHOTOS directory (and all sub-directories) consume over 150Gb (>21,000 files).

It's just a USB storage device. Buy a nice external harddrive and you'll be ahead!!

My wife doesn't have a million photos either but her stuff still takes almost 4TB. Photosticks are a joke for those who think they are being serious about their photography but haven't yet got even half a clue. I don't think I would even hesitate in calling them a scam.

boberic, you assume that everyone knows what "photostick" is. I don't... so if you gave a reference or a short description it would same the time of UHH people ... else we have to do a search. Why waste our time when you could be informative and courteous as JALZZ1 was in his/her's post. This is how your post should have been:
"I've been reading about this <Photostick> and it seems to good to be. Has anybody had any contact with it or know about it? It is a program on a USB drive that looks for and reads all your files to find only photo/video files and then download them after it gets rid of and deletes duplicates. They say that it is revolutionizing the way people store and backup their precious photos and home videos. It uses very special technology that automatically hunts through everything on your computer. It finds every personal photo and video, and then places them all in organized folders on the Stick."

boberic, you assume that everyone knows what "... (show quote)

If someone doesn't know what it is, they shouldn't just ask is it worth it, they should ask how it works, is it worth it...
Then, do all the responses have to explain how they work? Just in case?
Simple for the person who doesn't know how it works to look it up, eh?

Then, "worth it" is relative. Some people think they are great!
