I have a D500 and two full frame zoom lenses.
I am wondering if it would be better to upgrade to a D850 or mirrorless.
Will my current lenses be adaptable to a mirrorless, or is the D850 full frame a better idea.
Thanks.

You FX lenses will work on Z cameras with adapters. But any DX lenses will be limited to DX image area on Z6 and Z7.

Isn't your D500 doing the job? Adapters, I guess.

My D500 works just fine.
Just ready for full frame if it is worth it (the price).
Is there a D 900 on the horizon?

I have two D500s and a D850. All are outstanding cameras. Each will do probably 98% or more of anything you could ask it to do. Shooting the D850 is exactly the same as shooting the D500. Controls are identical, menus are the same except where the D850 has a couple of new functions that were not available on the D500. The D850 has some additional video capability and is about one stop better in low light situations.

In my opinion, the D500 has better ergonomic design and a little bit crisper and quieter shutter. Because the D850 is a full-frame camera, it will give you a little bit of advantage in wide-angle situations. Sensor density is the same in both cameras, for all practical purposes.

I consider these two cameras to be essentially equivalent. I use them completely interchangeably, depending on the image size I need or the file size required.

So I'd encourage you to think about what you need or want from a new camera. And I'd not get in a hurry to sell or trade the D500. Yes... there have been hints of a D870. Hard to imagine what it might offer. Hard also to know whether it will really happen.

I have both D500 and D850.

For some reason (convenience?) I mainly use the D500. (the D850 does not have a strap!!!)

Also, being a high definition the D850 is really finicky. Any camera motion, even small, will be recorded. You need to make sure you are stable to insure tack sharp images.

Other than that? There is very little to add.

Hi Larry -
Your comments are very valuable and helpful. Thank you. I am very happy with the D500. I was only thinking that full-frame might be better for me as in the future having only one body. Your points are making me wonder if having both bodies would be an option. Getting a 18-300 dx for the D500 and selling both of my fx lenses was a previous thought. This information is complicated. Wife thinks selling everything and getting a shirt-pocket Sony is more practical (she thinks cell-phone pics are acceptable). A quote: "The best camera is the one you have with you all of the time." For me, lugging a 15 lb bag or "stuff" on vacation is getting a little old. Thanks again for your professional comments. Keeping the D500 with two FX zooms is still an option.

Hi Larry - br Your comments are very valuable and ... (show quote)

I have the 17-55mm f/2.8 DX lens on one of my D500s and a 24-120mm f/4 (full frame) zoom on the other one. I have other choices, including the 18-200 DX that occasionally gets used for a casual all-day outing, but that's pretty rare. I go to the D850 for wide-angle needs.

There's no question that the D850 is a great camera. Problem is that the D500 is also.

I have a Z6 and D850. With only my opinions from using them, no scientific testing, I prefer using my F mount lenses on the D850. They seem to focus faster on the D850. As already mentioned, after using the D500 you will feel right at home with the D850.

Somebody mentioned the D500 having better ergonomics. I can't tell the difference between the D500 and D850 without looking at them.

Upgrade to the D850 and sell me the D500. or
Upgrade to Mirrorless and sell all your equipment if you plan to continue buying/replacing photo equipment for many years. Adapters are a pain.

Also the Z5 limits it to DX.
