Most... not all - Most SD failures are user induced.

In favour of having two cards:
My brother and a friend often go out "shooting" for a day. They have the camera record all images to both cards.
At the end of the day, they each take out one card and trade them. So they now have all the photos they took themselves, as well as all the photos the other one took.
Later on, they get together and compare how each of them "processed" the photos and discuss the "how's and why's".
They learn a lot from each other and are having fun. Sounds to me like it's well worth having a second card slot.

I've never understood the one slot paranoia either. My film cameras only have one roll of film. One's all one needs.

Once a person on this forum told me that I didn’t love my pictures because I used a camera with only one slot.

I have a camera with 2 slots...and so far (new to that camera) I have not found a need for it. But if I were a pro shooting a wedding or other true once in a lifetime event, I would use both slots for a backup to have redundancy. (I would also have another photog there doing the same thing for the same reason.) Other than that, my only plan to use it would be to make very small jpegs when we are on trips and I want to send shots to someone via email or post. With my other camera (oly) I will shoot RAW and very small jpegs on the same camera to upload the jpeg, but that is rare...

Loooong way of saying one slot is usually fine for my purposes.

Happy shooting

I'll bet the second slot being different from the first slot (SD/CF)
was to give people a choice between card types.
People wouldn't have to get all new cards if they switched camera brands.

If it was intended for backup, why not simply use a second of the same card type?

At one time, CFs were substantially faster. They still are (for my camera), but the difference is smaller now as SDs have gotten faster. The CF benchmarks about 118 MB/S and the SD about 95. The are both Sandisk extreme Pros.

Aren't the CF cards parallel data?
Seems like that would be 8 times faster than serial (SD) (for an 8 bit data bus).

Why don't they have 3 or 4 slots for added insurance????
Two cards can fail you know.

Because two is enough. Once I accidentally disconnected a flash drive from my computer while uploading and lost everything. I suppose the same thing could happen if you lose power during an upload. Fortunately I had the backup so nothing was lost. Stuff happens. Why scoff at redundancy when it can save you from time to time?

Not scoffing at the redundancy,
scoffing at some people's attitude about it.
None of my cameras have dual slots. Not going to get a new camera because I don't have dual slots.

Yep, CF cards are 16 bit wide parallel, but most of the current advances in bus speed have been in the serial configuration. Examples: 10Gbit Ethernet, PCI Express, 3000 Gbit Infiniband. They just use more lanes to get higher speeds, so in that respect some are a parallel configuration of individual high speed links unlike true parallel I/O, where parallel words are sent and received.

I thought they increased the serial data speed over the past few years.
Imaging how much faster 16 bit parallel would be with the same clock speed.
Data/address buses in computers are parallel for a reason.

I often research camera gear, just to see what is new and exciting. I own the Nikon D7500, as well as the D600, and have taken many wonderful photos with them. However, many "camera gear experts" really bad mouth the D7500, mainly because it has just one card slot. Really? So, I am wondering, does the average hobbyist photographer really need two card slots on their camera? I have been shooting for more than 15 years now, have gone out on all-day long photo shoots, and have never filled up one card, and yes, I usually shoot in raw. Plus, I have never had a card failure where I lost the photos on my card, perhaps I am very lucky. So, weigh in please with your opinion.

My opinion is that you shouldn't care what they said. If you don't think 1 card slot is a problem (which I don't think so either) then don't care about what they said. Why should you care?

Honestly, I’m not sure of the reasons of so much more increase in serial busses - if I were still working, I’d have this discussion with a design engineer. When I was at Tektronix and we saw all the latest developments in high speed data transfer (you couldn’t design it if you couldn’t measure it), we thought that parallel was the way to go for all the obvious reasons and serial would be ultimately limited by the fastest edges (rise time) that the line drivers could achieve, but it hasn’t turned out that way. While it is true that the internal busses of CPUs are parallel (they are VERY short), the interconnects for supercomputers are typically Infiniband (multiple lanes of high speed serial links). Perhaps one issue is crosstalk between conductors in a (relatively) long parallel cable, and optical fiber has driven the development of high serial speeds as well. Either way, what we are seeing is a predominance of hybrid of high speed serial links (except on iC dies) with multiple lanes when higher speed is required.

Sorry to have gone so far off-topic...

I would not buy a camera based on how many card slots it had, or doesn't have.
