This makes no sense, and I’m expecting to see some sort of retraction. I can shrug off all the whispers of doom and gloom regarding Nikon, but if this rumor turns out to be true, then that is one seriously messed up company!

Then it will need to be Nikon doing the retraction as it came directly from them.
As you know Canon is discontinuing Pro EF lenses now as well.
I would guess that the reasons are 1. Most pros already have the lens. 2. The resources need to be directed to the RF mount and having a complete pro stable of lenses for the pro camera.
Nikon is likely thinking the same direction with the Z system.

Not everything you read on the web is true. This OP is NOT a trusted source of mine. Best of luck.

Why think The negative perhaps they will be releasing a 500 PF MK 2 , like other companies do like sigma and tamron ....and of coarse like the 70-200 2.8 version VR II or perhaps leaving DSLRS behind sometime sooner than expected ...I hope not .

The writing is on the wall.
Nikon nearly ruined themselves by hanging on to the F mount way past the expiration date.
To continue beating a dead horse will only make it worse for them as it looks like new photographers want modern equipment.

Most "NEW" photographers don't know there b--t from hole in the ground and don't use or know how to use legacy glass .. most don't even know what the exposure triangle is and will buy anything with the word new and improved . I for one will not move to mirrorless and what I consider slow glass that seems to be a common trend in mirrorless glass . I mean come on $3000.00 and up for F1.2 glass and f2.8 glass not common anymore unless you empty your wallet . I will sit back and buy all that great f mount optics of fast primes on the cheap that you you photographers with bad cases of gas push aside for new and improved ... In a couple years I may be able to buy a D6 for under $2000.00 bucks and still sell my work and print large and in charge at galleries . A pro photographer doesn't need to have the latest camera to make great images .. Clyde Butcher still shoots a 16 x 20 wooden field camera and produces 10 foot wet prints from an enlarger taller than a man in his own galleries . With more than one gallery in Florida and work in galleries all over the world and museums he doesn't need the latest cameras made today wake up please ...

So, nothing modern and absolutely NO DSLRs (mirrorless or not). As I gathered from your pathetic posts, you have no experience with modern Nikon gear, yet you write like you're the great expert. NOT!! Just another TROLL!!

I too can't wait until everyone moves to mirrorless. I want a d850 for 800.00. And a 600f4 or 800f5.6 for a thousand or two.

I went shopping on 4/9/21 and purchased a 500/5.6 FL. According to the Nikon USA website, these are still an available product and according to my dealer, Allen's Camera, they are both selling well and well-liked by buyers. I really like mine and have given it some use when shooting sports since purchase. I also picked up the new 70-200/2.8 S lens which is also a great lens for the Z series cameras. Best of luck to all!
