A raster image is a
bitmap image regardless of bit depth, color space or size.
When a program asks you to rasterize an image before you are allowed to edit it, it simply means the image (or layer) you are trying to edit is not a bitmap image and needs to one.
This often happens when you use PS CC and 'smart objects', as an example.
