Interpolation vs Extrapolation

While we are not often exposed to these terms they are important in photography.
Interpolation is the process used to size down an image.
Extrapolation is the process used to upsize an image.
Interpolation usually works much better than extrapolation at is uses existing pixels to create a new averaged one. Extrapolation on the other hand uses existing pixels to create new ones.
Caveats:
→ Interpolation can create banding. Sharpness is affected.
→ Extrapolation usually leads to a loss of sharpness and sometime contrast.
A direct application of extrapolation in a camera is when it has a digital zoom. The results will vary and often produce a 'marble' effect - for lack of another word. Resizing using a computer gives better results.
