A while back I updated to BigSur after three hours of screwing around I finally got everything going. Well kind of > except for very long boot times, three - 5 mins.
I finally contacted Apple support on line the results were not good I was told to restart the computer in safe mode after three trys I got it booted in safe mode but lost my chat window and my Thunder Bolt monitor will not come on and the iMac fan is running high speed. Next was a phone call very nice lady first she says shut down and reboot , okay finally got rebooted in normal mode spent over an hr trying things , next she says I need to reload the OS, 2.5 hrs later now one of the startup windows keep running over and over. Back on the phone, this time a real nice guy, first restart holding down a couple of keys, okay reload os again , same out come!! Next call the Apple Store,ROBO answer that kept cutting out, Finally got a person , call kept breaking up finally got an appointment for tomorrow at 12:20 pm, so now its 5 hrs round trip to the store. the good thing is the computer is still under warranty.
PLEASE don't offer advice on how to fix. I am just venting!!!

I also have a problem, that was not able to correct, even by talking to apple. My external storage is not working. When I access it and try to save something, it kills the internet?!!! and i must restart the computer. I wish i could go back to my old operating system. What a pain in the a.. Apple is!!!

That all sucks, especially considering you spent a bundle on a MAC to not have problems. Seems like Apple is loosing it as far as computers and O/S go lately.

My HP C4680 printer no longer is recognized by the iMac since I updated to Big Sur, HP has no drivers for Big Sur OS, wish I had known this before updating.

To connect to the monitor, try a reset of the SMC (I found this process on the Apple site).

Apples have worms, but Windows have bugs. Neither one is perfect. I'll stick with my Windows PCs.

This Big Sur update is the first time I have had any trouble with Macs starting with a Mac Mini 20 yrs. ago, next a G5 Power Mac, then a 21" iMac and March of 2019 a 2017 iMac 27" all updates on these computers went fine until B/S pun intended!!!

I'll find out when I get the computer back from the Apple Store.

My conversion was a total nightmare. Probably 10 hours on the phone.
Slow boot, spinning wheel of death on simple tasks, error messages on drives not being ejected properly, TM not working right, and on and on.
I forgot that one reason I did not want to upgrade was I knew my Office would not work on BS. Yes, I was right about that.
Big mistake. Tried to go back to Mojave - but BS will not download it. So I'm stuck.

They are trying to regain complete control of everything. I am investigating a move back to Windows OS on custom hardware so I can upgrade when I need to.

After Apple under warranty through Best Buy replaced the mother board under warranty, 3 days left on the warranty from the original Apple Store purchase, the computer booted very slow. I also had them update to Big Sur as I wasn't able to without it crashing half way through the process.
Anyway after about a week of slow boots the machine now is working normally. Strange as nothing else has changed but it boots normal now. Kind of like a digital break in period of sorts (if there were such a thing).

I work with both systems and trust me, the Mac is far superior with respect to overall functioning. However, as the OS's on both sides get more and more complex, it gets harder and harder to debug them. My advice to others in my research institute is always: 1) Do not be the first up upgrade. Better to have 1 million users testing and reporting flaws than a few hundred. 2) Always have a time machine back up. If things turn to crap, then you can simply replace what you had before. No fuss no muss.

Sorry to preach after the fact....its more for the responders who are griping and considering a return to Windows. Guess what, you will have a number of similar woes there too. Time machine has saves so many users its incredible.

I am a long time Windows user. Couldn't get me mind around the weird way that a Mac does stuff and how they divorce you from the actual workings of the OS. Be that as it may I would like to point out that what causes the need to vent is what is happening NOW, not what has happened over the last 20 years.
I don't get any pleasure over what it was like 15 years ago, I only get annoyed over what is happening NOW, today, later the rest of today and maybe coming up tomorrow. Life is about anticipations (because it is the future) not the past (which are just memories and don't help you do anything).

Right and I dread the new Macs with the SSD and Memory soldered to the Motherboard. That is what is impelling me to consider returning to Windows. Macs have worked well, but Apple is sacrificing everything to style and they demand too much control taking the "personal" out of personal computer.
