I've never forgotten the camera, but just about anything else that could be forgotten at one time or another!

When I go on a road trip, I start assembling my gear a couple days ahead of departure.

In my case I can replace "might do" with "already have done"

I've only got one DSLR and one lens, so it would take a serious lapse of memory to leave me stuck (not impossible but so far it's never been that bad ).

Applicable to a lot of things other than photography too.

ALWAYS have at least one empty SD card in your wallet .

I have always used a mental checklist.

Lately I've been having trouble finding it.

Same here. I pack my photo equipment before anything else including my toothbrush! The biggest problem I have is always packing too much. I will take 2 to 3 bodies, and half-a-dozen lenses. I end up using one body and two lenses the whole trip -- sometimes 3 lenses but would never use all six!

The most important lens is the one you didn't pack.

Yep. For my road trips, I got it down to 2 camera bodies each with its own lens, along with a few accessories. Liberating.
