As I am sure you know the Tamron 150-600 and the similar Sigma lens are very popular optics for wildlife photography. I am sure that you will be happy with any of them.
I prefer to use what the manufacturer makes for their cameras and if I had to make a selecton I would go for the Nikon 200-500 VR lens.

Great choice. I have a Sigma 150-600C that I have used on a D7200 and now a D810. It's neck and neck with the Tamron. You'll get lots of suggestions I'm sure about Nikkor lens's but I have 4 Tamrons and 1 Sigma and the all do very well.

My honest opinion, FWIW, is Nikon glass for your D500.

I don't have that Tamron, I have the Sigma 150-600 C (great so far), but my decision was due to budget constraints and opportunity (special sale). I would have gone with the Tamron G2 based on reviews and some minor specs differences.

An important bonus (you should check) is if your current x2 converter will work with it. It it will, you have your answer. You could have 1800mm equivalent, although it may be hard to use at that FL.

I have a D500 and mostly do wildlife (including bird) photography. I purchased the Sigma 150-600C a couple of months before the Nikon 200-500 was released. I was really disappointed because I usually would stick with Nikon glass. I figured I would use the Sigma lens for a bit and sell it if I wanted. Well, I haven't sold it yet. It does produce outstanding wildlife photos on the D500. Saying that I would get the Nikon 200-500 but I think you would not be unhappy with the Tamron G2 or the Sigma. I would not recommend the Sigma Sport version if you are going to handhold (which I normally do for birds).

I have the Tamron 150-600 G2 and am very pleased. I was tending towards the Nikon 200-500 but it was unavailable and more expensive. I believe it may still be on backorder.

I think we (I) advised you to get the lens first ......Nikon 200-500 or Tamron 100-400 for cheaper.

I have owned two Tamron long lenses. Didn't like either one of them.
I now own two Nikon 200~500 and I love them. My wife and I take several hundred photos a week with each of them without any issues. We use them on both D500 and D850's. They are fantastic lenses.
I took one to Africa last year and it worked perfectly, perfect focus and IQ through around three thousand photographs. VR is great. No problem with dust intrusion. As long as I do my share of the work it is an excellent lens!!!

If weight and physical size are of any concern, you might also consider the Nikon 500 PF. However, with the 500PF you would be giving up the not insignificant ability to zoom. I have the 500 PF and I also have a Nikon 80-400. I use each of them in different circumstances and like them both. If you like small bird photography the 600mm of the Tamaron could be an important consideration.

I have used the Nikon 200-500 5.6 lens for over 5 years now and it delivers great images. They do put this lens on sale from time to time, but even at it's normal price it is one great value. Comes with a 5 year warranty.
Did I mention how sharp it is, the image below is of a Great Egret, I have sold this print about 20 times. Love the results from this lens. The second image is also an image of a Great Egret.
Like I said, this is the only tele zoom I would recommend for your D500, you will not be disappointed.

Up to you on whether to go with the Tamron or Nikon 200-500, based on cost, image quality, and weight. I was unhappy with the reach of my 70-300, so...

I got the Nikon 16 months ago, love it, and have no regrets...but it is too heavy to hand hold and I’m now another $1000 in the hole on tripods, mounts, cases, filters, QR adapter systems, and straps. Yes...there’s some minor GAS going on here...it’s a slippery slope.

I bought a used 200-500 in excellent condition for less than a thousand dollars. Great Lens. Nikon occasionally have sales on refurbs. Another way to go.
