I was doing a little gardening here in Fl today and came across a little creature. Since it resembled a snake and about 6-10” long and the size of a pencil I cut it in half twice. The head had the orange band around it and the entire underbelly was a very similar orange in color. There were no legs.
A cell phone pic of a portion of the head area is attached
Any ideas.

Why in the hell did you kill it It WAS a Ring-necked Snake. They eat bugs and are totally harmless. I'd like to say a lot more but I won't.

I’m sorry curmudgeon I didn’t know. I was told once down south anything orange you kill it. I wasn’t going to let it get into the house . I guess I’ll be wiser in the future thanks to you.
By the way.... thanks for biting your tongue and not adding a few more remarks for this northerner.

Next time, I suggest the responses should be more about educating and less about vilifying and condemning.

Jim, I apologize. It was a visceral response and Waldron is right I shouldn't have reacted that way. The great majority of snakes are beneficial and their residence in your yard should be encouraged. Learn how to identify rattlesnakes, the only poisonous snake in your area. If it's not a rattlesnake it's a friend.

If you are ever lucky enough to see another Ring-necked Snake, pick it up gently, notice that it is not cold or slimey. In fact if you are gentle it will probably curl around your fingers to absorb your body warmth.

Don't pick up rubber boas, unless you like to have your hands stink for hours. Rubber Boas are black without a ring around what we would call a neck. They do not have a pointed tail, it is rounded.

It is not poisonous. Unless it is an invasive species I’m not aware of. Not found here in Texas.

Unfortunately, most city(and some country) kill every snake they see. Most are very beneficial to us. Don’t ever let a local find out you killed a blue Indigo snake in south Texas. They prefer to dine on rattlesnakes. They are huge.

I totally agree with you...dudes and dudettes...there are only FOUR types of venomous snakes in the entire United States...Copperheads, Rattlesnakes, Water Moccasins, and Coral Snakes. All except the rattlers come in standard colors with few variations. Only the rattlers have any color differences, usually according to the elevation where they are found, but they all have diamond shaped heads, rattles, and slit eyes. All snakes are beneficial but the non-venomous are a real benefit to mankind. If you can't identify it as one of the venomous types then leave it the hell alone!

Sounds like my neighbor.
Kills everything that moves...
I don't even try to educate him...he's 75 years old...he's hardwired to be unenlightened.
