This is a Green Bottle Fly that I have preserved since swatting it last summer. I've gotten fairly good at swatting them without smashing them flat although not all go as hoped. I've included a graphic (thanks to commons.wikimedia.org) that illustrates the parts that can be seen in the partial image of this fly.

Thanks, UTMike. This fly was pretty crudy including bits of wax and fats that they exude. I soak them in "Brakleen" chlorinated spray automotive brake cleaner that I get at Walmart ($4.00) which dissolves it. I can pick off the general debris with a brush and with a piece of scotch tape after I've blown them with the air puffer.

The beautiful emerald color belies its ugliness.

Thanks, Fotoartist. I wanted to share a bit about what one may be looking at when they view the fly's body.

Thanks, the Green Bottle Fly has some lovely iridescent colors for such a nasty creature.

Thanks, Earnest. I wanted to share just how complex a common fly truly is.
