I know I need to Google Farmington Bay to see a bird refuge but you always do a wonderful job 👍👍😊😊

Thanks, Susan. While googling Utah sites, check out Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge. That is the big place in this area. Farmington Bay is about an hour closer to me.

As many of you know, I am a landscape enthusiast ("rock shooter") who attempts to get some decent bird photos. Whenever I go to a bird refuge I also like to capture what the area is like. I had a cold, windy day for shooting, but with decent light. This set shows the only two flying shots I took and some shots to show you Farmington Bay.

In past shoots here I had a problem with excessive noise when I set my camera at high speeds and ISO. So, I entered a setting for BIFs. The first two photos in this set are a male harrier (I think).

The landscapes show what the Farmington Bay area looks like from various positions.

Great moments taken in BIFs, and the scape images are neatly composed. Very well done, Mike!
I appreciate your encouraging comments, Eugene.

Nice set Mike, for a rock shooter your BIS are nothing to complain about I really like the last shot, I have never seen so many Pied-billed Grebes in one place before

Thanks, Jack. That shot illustrates the number and variety of birds that are all around that area.

Very nice set Mike. Love those pano's and mountain views. I like how you captured the hawk scanning the ground as you caught him in flight.

I am happy you liked the set, Vince. That harrier was a wonderful subject because he flew slow and in a straight line.

Beautiful. Just simply beautiful.
And the Harrier images are nothing to sneeze at. Just kidding the Harrier shots are very nice the second is my favorite. The Landscapes are wonderful.

Thanks, Bill. The harrier shots illustrate my concerns in just how to crop to present these photos.

Thanks for your generous comments, Patty. I use a 100 - 400 mm lens with a 1.4tc. My birding pre-set is Auto focus, Auto ISO (the shot you liked was 125); auto WB. This one was 1/500 at f/8. The firmware on the lens is excellent for birds.

Thanks for the info, Mike. I use the same lens/tc combo. I'm still uncomfortable with Auto ISO, just because it often goes much higher than I would normally like to shoot. BIF require quick adjustments, so it's hard to predict sometimes. I think I just need to get used to it. ;)

You do run the chance of a lot of noise, but the quick adjustments gets the moving birds. Topaz DeNoise really helps cure many problems from BIF shots.

UTMike- Love your series. I have a bird photographer I've followed for years who lives in Salt Lake City & one of the places he goes to is Farmington Bay. You may know him. His name is Ron Dudley & his website is called "Feathered Photography" & he's also on FaceBook. You might want to check him out.

Thanks for your generous comment. I use "On the Wing" by Mia McPherson. I understand that she and Ron are friends. She goes into the Wasatch, out on Antelope Island and out in the Western desert in addition to Farmington Bay and Bear River. I cannot recognize her, but she has been at the Bay a few times when I went.
